Description
Hiroko Asami is a central character introduced in the 2022 film Shin Ultraman, where she serves as an analyst for the SSSP, which stands for S-Class Species Suppression Protocol. Her background lies in intelligence work; before joining this specialized team, she was a senior investigator in the foreign intelligence division of the Public Security Intelligence Agency. She is later dispatched from this agency to become the SSSP's analysis officer, acting as the direct partner to the protagonist, Shinji Kaminaga.

On the surface, Hiroko maintains a composed and professional appearance, but she possesses a lively and straightforward personality that becomes evident through her actions. She is fundamentally optimistic and often acts without hesitation, employing a unique personal ritual of slapping her own butt to motivate herself. While she is careful and sensitive to the opinions of others, her efficiency in the field is notable. When performing her duties, she can conduct precise and rapid analysis to assess situations and identify the characteristics of unknown lifeforms. Her competence is further highlighted by her fluency in foreign languages, including Russian.

Hiroko's primary motivation is tied to her role in investigating and understanding the giant unidentified lifeform that comes to be known as Ultraman. In fact, she is the character who assigns the name Ultraman to the hero, taking the word Ultra from her past training and adding Man due to its humanoid shape. Her role in the story is critical as Kaminaga's partner and supporter. Initially skeptical of Kaminaga, who often acts alone, she develops an unspoken understanding with him as they work together. This partnership deepens significantly when she discovers the Beta Capsule that allows him to transform, and she ultimately returns it to him, asking him to defeat an impostor.

Her development throughout the narrative involves a series of profound challenges. She is kidnapped by the alien Mefilas to be used as an experimental subject. In a terrifying turn of events, she is enlarged to a gigantic size and transformed into a giant in Tokyo's Hibiya area, her body composed of an unknown substance. After being restored to normal by Mefilas, she endures investigations from various agencies, a process that leaves her feeling deeply embarrassed. Demonstrating resilience and resourcefulness, she later uses the residual Beta material left on her body from this incident to help locate a dimensional device, which ultimately foils Mefilas's plans. In the film's climax, after Ultraman is seemingly sacrificed to defeat the ultimate weapon Zetton, Hiroko is shown staying by a comatose Kaminaga's side in the hospital and working with her team to study the Beta System in a desperate attempt to find a solution.

Regarding notable abilities, Hiroko's primary strengths are not physical but intellectual. She is a skilled analyst capable of making quick, accurate assessments in high-pressure situations. She is also fluent in Russian, showcasing her aptitude for foreign languages. Her most unique ability in the film is not an innate power but a temporary condition: after being transformed into a giant by Mefilas, she briefly possesses a colossal form made of an unidentifiable substance. Beyond this, her resourcefulness and bravery are her key traits, as she proves willing to use a chainsaw to rescue her partner and use her own transformed body's residue to aid the mission.
