Description
Mefilas is an extraterrestrial being from the planet Mefilas who appears in the 2022 film Shin Ultraman. He designates himself as Extraterrestrial No. 0 and arrives on Earth prior to Ultraman, having already spent considerable time studying human society. He adopts a human disguise, presenting himself as a well-dressed, polite, and seemingly sophisticated individual who frequents ordinary establishments such as izakaya bars. His demeanor is calm, courteous, and deliberate, and he frequently incorporates Japanese proverbs and sayings into his speech, often introducing them with the phrase that it is his favorite or least favorite expression.
Mefilas is highly intelligent and cunning, with a manipulative and pragmatic approach to achieving his goals. His primary motivation is to secure exclusive control over humanity, which he views as having great potential as a biological weapon on a cosmic scale. He is not driven by a desire for wanton destruction but rather by a calculated ambition to monopolize Earth's inhabitants before other alien civilizations can stake a claim. He believes that force is not the most efficient means of conquest and instead favors negotiation, demonstration of power, and establishing agreements that place him in a position of authority.
In the story, Mefilas first makes his presence known by kidnapping SSSP analyst Hiroko Asami and using his advanced technology, a device called the Beta Box, to transform her into a giant as a demonstration of his capabilities. He then restores her to normal size to prove his goodwill while simultaneously showcasing his power to the Japanese government. He proposes a treaty in which he will supply the Beta Box as a deterrent weapon in exchange for humanity's unconditional obedience. His true intention is to turn humanity into a managed resource under his sole jurisdiction. When Shinji Kaminaga, fused with Ultraman, opposes this plan and leads the SSSP to hijack the Beta Box, Mefilas confronts Ultraman in combat. He proves to be a formidable opponent, matching Ultraman in physical combat and reflecting his beam attacks. However, upon sensing the arrival of a more powerful entity, Zoffy, he chooses to withdraw rather than risk unnecessary conflict, leaving Earth with the Beta Box and warning Ultraman of future threats.
In terms of key relationships, Mefilas interacts directly with Ultraman, whom he regards as a rival and an obstacle to his plans. He attempts to persuade Ultraman to join him by appealing to logic and shared alien heritage, but his offer is rejected. He also engages with the Japanese government and the SSSP, treating them as parties to be negotiated with or manipulated. His relationship with the higher authority Zoffy is one of caution and respect for power.
Mefilas develops from a confident, calculating negotiator who believes his scheme is foolproof into someone forced to accept an unexpected setback when his deal is thwarted. Despite this, he does not act out of desperation, choosing instead to retreat and preserve his options.
Notable abilities associated with Mefilas include a high degree of intelligence and strategic thinking. He has access to advanced alien technology, most prominently the Beta Box, which can enlarge or shrink living beings. In his true giant form, which is sleek, black, and silver with twenty fingers on his hands, he possesses great physical strength and combat skill, able to go toe to toe with Ultraman. He can also fire energy beams from his hands and has demonstrated the capacity to reflect incoming attacks. His shape-shifting ability allows him to blend seamlessly into human society.
