Description
Female Staff A, whose full name is Yumi Funaberi, serves as the biologist for the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol, the organization at the heart of the story. Her background is distinctly international, as she originally comes from California before working for the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Within the team, she is often the one to propose countermeasures against attacking giant creatures from a biological point of view, bringing a scientific perspective to their tactical operations. Before another female member joined, she was the only woman on the team.

In terms of personality, Yumi has a natural and lively disposition. She is notably talkative and speaks at a fast pace, often inserting English words into her dialogue and sometimes using blunt or profane language. Her communication is direct and focused, especially when expressing her thoughts about how to handle the S-Class species. Despite her expertise as a biologist, she has a few quirky vulnerabilities, such as not being particularly skilled at handling insects like flies. She also has a lower tolerance for stress, a trait she manages by consuming large quantities of sweets as a pressure release mechanism. She occasionally views events with a slightly exaggerated attitude, adding a touch of humanity to her scientific demeanor.

Her primary motivation throughout the narrative is rooted in survival and the application of human intellect. When faced with the overwhelming power of Ultraman and subsequent alien threats, she does not succumb to fear or resentment. Instead, she articulates a core philosophy that to survive, humanity must become strong by using its wisdom, resilience, and courage. This belief drives her to actively search for solutions rather than passively accept fate. She is deeply invested in protecting Earth not through violence alone, but through understanding and strategic thinking.

Within the story, her role evolves from that of a supporting analyst to a crucial problem-solver. Early on, she is present during the mission against the monster Neronga, where she and her team witness the shocking arrival of Ultraman. As the plot unfolds and the alien Zarab reveals that her colleague Kaminaga is Ultraman, Yumi displays immediate and unwavering loyalty. She does not harbor any unease or betrayal upon this discovery; when confusion arises due to the presence of two identical giants, she confidently identifies the real Ultraman, trusting her colleague implicitly. Later, when the alien Mefilas experiments with a device that enlarges her fellow team member, she helps locate the machine to foil the plot, an act that leads to the entire team’s temporary detention by the Japanese government.

Key relationships define her actions and growth. She shares a warm and welcoming rapport with the team’s new analyst, Hiroko, actively engaging with her upon arrival. Her relationship with the team member Taki is particularly significant in the final act. After the alien Zoffy announces a plan to destroy Earth using the Zetton weapon, the team is left disheartened. However, Yumi shares her perspective on survival with a despairing Taki and draws his attention to a USB drive left behind by Kaminaga. This act of hope leads them to discover archived files containing the fundamental principles of the Beta System and the equations needed to defeat Zetton. Her determination directly inspires the plan that saves the planet.

Her development arc moves from being a stressed but competent biologist to a beacon of hope and resilience. When she learns of Earth’s impending destruction, she is initially taken aback but is devoid of remorse, instead finding herself infused with a determined will to find a way to stop the Zetton weapon. She challenges the government's passive stance of doing nothing and actively works with Taki to decrypt the information left by Ultraman. Her notable abilities are not physical but intellectual and emotional. Her expertise in biology provides the team with a unique analytical framework, but her most significant contribution is her unyielding courage and her ability to inspire others to use their intelligence to overcome impossible odds. In the end, she witnesses the successful defeat of Zetton and is deeply saddened by the apparent sacrifice of Ultraman, only to smile again when he is given new life and reunited with the team.
