Description
In the 2022 film Shin Ultraman, the character referred to as Man A is the titular silver giant known by the name Ultraman, originally called Lipiah. He is an extraterrestrial being from a distant planet of light, who arrives on Earth to counter the rising threat of giant kaiju. During his first battle with the monster Neronga, he accidentally kills a human SSSP officer named Shinji Kaminaga. Deeply moved by Kaminaga’s selfless act of trying to save a child, Ultraman chooses to merge his essence with Kaminaga’s body, taking on his appearance and assuming his place within the S-Class Species Suppression Protocol.
Personality-wise, Ultraman begins as a detached, mission-driven alien, but his time on Earth—shaped by Kaminaga’s memories and the relationships he forms—gradually transforms him into a character defined by empathy, curiosity, and a growing sense of protectiveness toward humanity. He is thoughtful and analytical, often observing rather than intervening prematurely, and he demonstrates a quiet but firm resolve when confronting threats. His core motivation stems from a desire to atone for the accidental death he caused and to safeguard the planet from both kaiju and malevolent extraterrestrials like Zarab and Mefilas. Over the course of the story, his purpose evolves from simple defense to a deep, personal commitment to human beings, eventually valuing their lives above his own directives.
In the narrative, Ultraman serves as the primary heroic force opposing the various S-Class Species. He integrates into the SSSP team under the guise of Kaminaga, working alongside analyst Hiroko Asami, physicist Akihisa Taki, and the rest of the unit. His role is both protector and diplomat, as he must navigate complex political and interstellar situations while hiding his true nature. Key relationships include his bond with Hiroko Asami, who grows to trust and support him, and his superior from his home world, Zoffy, who initially views humanity as a potential threat. The dynamic with Shinji Kaminaga is central: Kaminaga’s memories and humanity influence Ultraman’s decisions, and in the final confrontation, Ultraman willingly sacrifices his own existence to resurrect Kaminaga after their fusion is severed, an act that ultimately earns Zoffy’s reluctant respect.
Development is marked by a shift from an outsider executing a mission to an individual who genuinely identifies with the people he protects. He confronts moral dilemmas, such as the temptation of power represented by Mefilas’s Beta Box, and chooses empathy over his own planet’s cold logic. By the end, his journey concludes with him choosing to stay on Earth even at the cost of returning home, cementing his love for humanity.
Notable abilities include his supernatural strength and size, the capacity to change his appearance from an all-silver form to the classic red-and-silver design after merging with Kaminaga, and a set of energy-based attacks. He wields the Spacium Ray, a cross‑arm beam that can disintegrate opponents; the Ultra Slash, a buzzsaw‑like energy disc thrown at enemies; and a rectangular force shield that can deflect projectiles. He also uses a transformation device called the Beta Capsule, which stores the energy needed to shift between human and giant forms. Unlike previous Ultraman designs, he lacks a chest Color Timer; instead, his red body markings turn green to indicate low energy. His abilities are augmented by the knowledge and intelligence of both himself and the SSSP scientists, who later devise a method to create a black hole that ultimately destroys the ultra‑weapon Zetton.
