Description
Hideo Suzuki is the thirty-five-year-old protagonist of I am a Hero, a struggling manga artist whose life is a study in quiet desperation. Working as an assistant to a successful but uninspired creator, Hideo finds himself stuck in a low-paying, unfulfilling job while nursing dreams of launching his own hit series, dreams that have never materialized following the cancellation of his previous work. He is a man who feels like a supporting character in his own existence, lacking direction and waiting for a life that never seems to begin.

Hideo's personality is defined by his deep-seated fears and anxieties. He is timid, insecure, and often paralyzed by his own thoughts, frequently babbling to himself or launching into lengthy, one-sided rants about the future of the manga industry when stressed. A significant part of his psychological makeup involves persistent, terrifying hallucinations, particularly at night, where he sees disembodied faces and hands. He also carries on conversations with an imaginary friend named Yajima, a trait that further isolates him from his coworkers. Despite his fragile mental state, he is not a malicious person; he is fundamentally a nice individual who tries to follow the rules, a trait that becomes both a hindrance and a defining characteristic when society collapses.

His primary motivation before the outbreak is a desperate need for validation and success, to become the hero of his own life and change his fortune. He struggles to maintain a relationship with his girlfriend, Tetsuko Kurokawa, but his insecurities and inability to be honest with her or anyone else keep the relationship strained and unfulfilling. When the zombie infection, known as ZQN, begins to spread, his motivation shifts from professional ambition to sheer survival. As events unfold, he is driven by a growing sense of responsibility to protect the few people he comes to care about, even as the world descends into chaos.

Within the story, Hideo functions as an unconventional survivor. He is not a natural leader or a fearless warrior but a deeply flawed, realistic everyman whose unique quirks become unexpectedly relevant. His most defining asset is his legally owned sporting shotgun, a rare item in Japan due to strict firearm laws. He is deeply serious about his license and refuses to let anyone else touch his weapon, clinging to legal propriety even as the apocalypse rages around him. His initial role is that of a reluctant observer, slow to realize the true horror of the infection as he often dismisses initial attacks as more of his hallucinations. As the outbreak intensifies, he becomes a crucial figure in his small group of survivors simply by being armed, forcing him into confrontations he would otherwise avoid.

Key relationships profoundly shape his journey. His connection with his girlfriend, Tetsuko, ends in tragedy when she becomes one of the first infected he encounters, an event that deeply traumatizes him. Later, he joins forces with a schoolgirl named Hiromi Hayakari, and his decision to protect her and escort her to safety becomes a central pillar of his character arc. This relationship, along with others he forms along the way, pushes him to evolve beyond his selfish, fearful nature.

Hideo undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. He begins as a cowardly man who avoids conflict and responsibility, but his experiences force him to adapt. He gradually learns to overcome his paralyzing hesitation, using his rifle to fight and kill the infected, and he reflects on how he has become desensitized to the violence necessary for survival. He transitions from a passive participant in his own life to someone who actively tries to take responsibility for others, battling his deep-seated fears to protect those he cares about. While he frequently mutters "I am a hero" as a survival mantra to gather courage, his actions eventually begin to give the phrase real meaning.

Beyond his marksmanship with a shotgun, Hideo possesses several notable abilities. He is physically athletic and demonstrates keen survival skills, including the knowledge of how to create ammunition. A more unusual ability manifests as the story progresses. He seems to develop a mysterious capacity to influence and manipulate the movements of the infected, almost like a puppeteer controlling their actions, a power that sets him apart from other survivors. Despite his mental fragility and the immense trauma he endures, his ability to survive against overwhelming odds, combined with his evolving bravery and unique skills, defines him as the unlikely hero the title ambiguously claims him to be.
