Description
Nakajō is a minor antagonist in the film Rurouni Kenshin Saishūshō The Beginning. He is a member of the Yaminobu, a covert pro-shogunate assassination group that operates in the final years of the Bakumatsu period. Physically, Nakajō is a muscular man with black hair that extends past his ears, thin eyebrows, and pale white eyes. He is the best friend of Otowa Hyōko, another Yaminobu member, and from Hyōko he acquired a fighting technique known as Chusen. This technique likely forms the core of his combat style.
In the story, Nakajō serves as one of the lower-ranking operatives within the Yaminobu, loyal to the group’s leader, Tatsumi. His primary motivation is to carry out the Yaminobu’s mission of eliminating Kenshin Himura, the revolutionary assassin known as Hitokiri Battōsai. His role in the narrative is that of an early obstacle: he is the first member of the Yaminobu to confront Kenshin directly during the confrontation in the Binding Forest. This encounter serves as a preliminary test for Kenshin before he faces more powerful foes within the group.
Nakajō’s key relationship is with his friend Otowa Hyōko, who taught him the Chusen technique. Beyond this bond, he functions as a cog in the larger Yaminobu machine, with no personal grudge or deeper motivation beyond his duty. He has no development over the course of the film; he appears solely as a combatant to be overcome. His notable ability is his use of the Chusen technique, though the specifics of this technique are not elaborated in the film. He is ultimately defeated by Kenshin, having fulfilled his purpose as an early threat in the antagonist group.
