Shigekura Jubei is a supporting character in the narrative of Rurouni Kenshin Saishūshō The Beginning, serving a crucial role in the early life of the protagonist, Himura Kenshin. Within the historical context of the Bakumatsu period, Jubei holds the position of a high-ranking samurai and an official for the Tokugawa bakufu, the shogunate government, operating in the city of Kyoto. His status as a pro-shogunate figure places him directly in opposition to the ideals of the Ishin Shishi, a coalition of revolutionaries seeking to overthrow the shogunate and restore imperial rule. Consequently, the Chōshū Ishin Shishi, the specific faction to which Kenshin is attached, identifies Jubei as a significant threat to their plans for a new era and marks him for assassination.
In terms of personality, Jubei is portrayed as an older gentleman who, despite the violent and uncertain era he inhabits, possesses a notable zeal for life. While Ishiji gives his life in a desperate attempt to protect his charge, Kenshin successfully strikes Jubei down using a technique from the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu known as Ryūtsuisen Zan. Following the assassination, other members of the Ishin Shishi place a tag marked Tenchū, meaning Divine Retribution, by his corpse as a warning to others who might oppose them.
