Description
Mumyoi Yatsume is a character from the anime Rurouni Kenshin Saishūshō The Final, adapted from the manga’s Jinchū arc. He is a member of a clan of gold miners from Echigo who developed a practice known as human refinement, a process of physically altering the body to improve mining efficiency. From childhood, Yatsume underwent this refinement, resulting in limbs that are roughly twice the length of an ordinary person’s, with his left arm being particularly elongated and fitted with a large metal claw. His teeth were also sharpened into fangs, giving him a grotesque, inhuman appearance.

Yatsume’s motivation is rooted in a combination of clan loyalty and a personal vendetta. After his clan’s gold veins were exhausted, he joined the Tokugawa-affiliated shadow organization Yaminobu to earn money for his people. During the Bakumatsu, he encountered the hitokiri Battōsai, Himura Kenshin, in a forest and was defeated, sustaining a crushed right hand. Clan tradition dictated that anyone who saw his face must be killed, so Yatsume spent fifteen years further refining his left arm, lengthening it and reinforcing it with a claw, to prepare for a rematch. He joined Yukishiro Enishi’s campaign of revenge, known as the Jinchū, as one of the six comrades, driven by the need to fulfill his clan’s rule and by a desire to prove himself.

Personality-wise, Yatsume is serious, formal, and somewhat isolated. He hides his face from his allies to maintain the clan’s secrecy, even addressing them from holes in the ceiling. He is deeply offended when referred to as a monster, as he sees his appearance as a necessary sacrifice for his clan. Despite his monstrous looks, he shows respect toward his fellow comrades and, after his defeat, accepts Kenshin’s offer of a chance to start anew rather than continuing the cycle of revenge. He is one of only three of the six comrades who is genuinely obsessed with taking revenge on Kenshin.

In the story of Rurouni Kenshin Saishūshō The Final, Yatsume participates in Enishi’s coordinated attacks on Tokyo. He is initially seen hiding in the ceiling of Enishi’s headquarters, then emerges to fight during the assault on the Kamiya Dojo. He confronts Saitō Hajime, expecting to face Kenshin, but is quickly overwhelmed by Saitō’s fighting style and is defeated. After his arrest, Kenshin offers to let him fight later if he still wishes, but suggests he travel north to use his digging abilities to support his clan. Yatsume is taken into police custody, showing a hint of redemption.

Key relationships include his allegiance to Enishi, who supplies him with weapons, and his antagonism toward Kenshin, whom he blames for crushing his hand and seeing his face. He also has a brief but decisive conflict with Saitō, who derides him as a monster, triggering his anger.

Yatsume’s notable abilities center on his physically altered body. His elongated limbs allow him to attack from outside normal range, and his left claw can dig through solid ground with ease. He is an expert burrower, able to move underground and launch surprise attacks. He also uses explosive ceramic shells called Bandan Jiraihou, which he plants in the ground to create minefields, and a technique called Bandan Jiraihou that spreads multiple explosives across an area. His entire body is toughened through refinement, including his teeth, making him a resilient and dangerous opponent in close combat and subterranean warfare.
