Description
Lockon Stratos is a codename used by two characters in the Mobile Suit Gundam 00 universe, most notably the original bearer Neil Dylandy and later his younger twin brother Lyle Dylandy. In the context of Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Re:(in)novation, the second bearer Lyle takes on the identity of Lockon Stratos, though both figures share the same core role and many traits.
The original Lockon Stratos, born Neil Dylandy in Ireland, lost his parents and younger sister Amy in a terrorist attack when he was thirteen. This tragedy drove him to join the private armed organization Celestial Being, seeking the power to eliminate war and exact revenge on the perpetrator, Ali Al-Saachez. He adopted the codename Lockon Stratos, which reflects his exceptional long-range marksmanship ability, and piloted the GN-002 Gundam Dynames, a mobile suit specialized for sniping. Neil was the oldest of the four Gundam Meisters, often acting as an unofficial leader and mentor, especially to the younger Setsuna F. Seiei. Outwardly, he appeared laid-back, friendly, and flirtatious, using humor to ease tension, but beneath that exterior lurked deep anger and a consuming drive for vengeance. His internal conflict came to a head when he discovered Setsuna had been involved in the terrorist group that killed his family; after a confrontation, he chose to forgive Setsuna and focus his hatred on Ali Al-Saachez. Neil eventually died in battle during a final clash with Ali, sacrificing himself to damage the enemy mobile armor and protect his comrades.
Following Neil’s death, his twin brother Lyle Dylandy – who had lived a separate life unaware of Neil’s activities – was recruited by Setsuna to take up the mantle of Lockon Stratos in the second season and in alternate retellings such as Re:(in)novation. Lyle initially joined the anti-government group Katharon before being scouted for Celestial Being. He piloted the GN-006 Cherudim Gundam, a successor to the Dynames, and later the GN-010 Zabanya. Lyle’s personality differs from his brother’s: he is more cynical and reluctant at first, but gradually grows into the role. He struggles with his brother’s legacy and his own desire for a peaceful life, ultimately finding purpose in continuing Neil’s mission to end conflict. His key relationships include a romantic interest in Anew Returner and a tense but cooperative bond with Setsuna, as well as a rivalry with Ali Al-Saachez, whom he eventually confronts.
As a Gundam Meister, Lockon Stratos is defined by extraordinary sniping skills, tactical acumen, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. The original Neil was known for his strategic mind and proficiency with a wide array of firearms, while Lyle honed his own combat abilities through experience. Both versions serve as the team’s primary long-range support, providing covering fire and precision strikes. The codename Lockon Stratos thus represents a legacy of sacrifice, redemption, and the ongoing fight against terrorism and war, embodied by two brothers who each gave everything for the cause.
