Description
Billy Katagiri is a character from the anime Mobile Suit Gundam 00, who also appears in its theatrical sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam 00: A Wakening of the Trailblazer, as well as the stage play Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Re:(in)novation. Born on April 24, 2276, he is a tall individual, standing at 189 cm, and is of Japanese and Union descent. Over the course of the story, his age progresses from 31 in the first season to 36 in the second season, and finally 38 in the film.
In terms of background, Billy is a brilliant engineer and scientist. He studied under the renowned Professor Ralph Eifman at the Union International University, where he first met a fellow student named Leesa Kujo. This academic relationship would prove to be a pivotal point in his life. Following his studies, he joined the Union military as a technical advisor for the MSWAD (Mobile Suit Warehouse and Development)王牌部队, where he became close friends with the ace pilot Graham Aker. His early role involves analyzing the threat of the newly appeared Gundams; his sharp intellect allows him to quickly deduce the existence of a special particle, later known as GN particles, as the source of their power.
Personality-wise, Billy is initially portrayed as a passionate, sentimental, and caring individual, particularly towards those he holds dear. He is a loyal friend to Graham and is shown to be a competent and level-headed professional. However, beneath this calm exterior lies a deep romantic longing for Leesa Kujo, who is secretly the Celestial Being tactical forecaster known as Sumeragi Lee Noriega. When he discovers this truth, his personality undergoes a drastic and negative transformation. Driven by feelings of betrayal and heartbreak, he becomes spiteful, vengeful, and bitter, channeling all his emotional pain into the development of new mobile suits to destroy Celestial Being.
His motivations are closely tied to his relationships. His primary motivation for much of the series is his unresolved love for Sumeragi and his subsequent desire for revenge against her and her organization. His friendship with Graham Aker is another key driver; he remains a steadfast ally, providing Graham with increasingly powerful custom mobile suits, such as the GN Flag, to pursue his own rivalry with the Gundams. After Sumeragi leaves him to return to Celestial Being, Billy joins the anti-Celestial Being organization A-Laws, partly to exact revenge and partly because his uncle, Homer Katagiri, is a high-ranking commander within it.
Billy plays a crucial role as the chief technical developer for the Union and later the A-Laws. He is responsible for the development of key mobile suit technologies and is instrumental in creating the anti-Gundam mobile suits for the Earth Sphere Federation. One of his most significant contributions is deciphering Professor Eifman's research notes to understand and weaponize the Trans-Am system, a powerful but risky mode that drastically enhances a mobile suit's performance. This technology is later provided to the Innovators.
Throughout the story, Billy undergoes significant development. He starts as a supportive friend and loyal Union officer. His discovery of Sumeragi's true identity marks a turning point, leading him down a dark path of resentment. He pours his genius into creating the very weapons meant to kill his former love. However, in the climax of the second season, he confronts Sumeragi directly. Unable to kill her, he finally begins to reconcile with the past. By the end of the series and into the film, he has returned to a more balanced state, having made peace with Sumeragi and moved on to a new romantic relationship with a woman named Mina Carmine.
Billy's notable abilities are almost entirely intellectual. He is a world-class expert in multiple disciplines, including physics, mechanical engineering, and robotics. He is a leading authority on GN particle technology, capable of analyzing and replicating advanced systems that were previously thought to be exclusive to Celestial Being. His ability to reverse-engineer and develop new technologies under pressure makes him one of the most valuable technical assets for the Earth Sphere Federation's military forces.
