Description
Akari Akaza is a central character in her first year of middle school, positioned as the nominal protagonist of her friend group. She is recognizable by her short red hair, which she styles into two small, round buns on the sides of her head, and her purple eyes. Standing at 153 centimeters tall, she has a gentle and warm appearance that matches her demeanor.

Akari possesses a personality that is fundamentally kind, cheerful, and benevolent. She is consistently polite and is considered incapable of malicious behavior, always seeking to maintain harmony with those around her. Her nature is notably pure and optimistic; she rarely, if ever, becomes angry or annoyed, a trait that sometimes surprises her friends who see her as an almost angelic figure. Despite her innate friendliness, she is easily frightened and has a tendency to faint when startled. A significant source of comedy surrounding Akari is her very low social presence. She is often overlooked, forgotten, or treated as invisible by the other characters, a running gag that defines much of her experience. Consequently, one of her secret, heartfelt desires is to stand out more and receive attention from others.

Akari’s primary motivation is simply to enjoy her time with her friends, whom she values deeply. She joined the Amusement Club, a room with no official activities where she and her friends spend their afternoons, when she entered middle school. Within the story, she often serves as the straight-laced, ordinary center around whom the more eccentric personalities revolve, though she is frequently pushed to the sidelines as a result. Her role is that of an unassuming heart for the group, one whose warmth and good nature are essential even when her presence is not immediately acknowledged.

Her most significant relationships are with her two childhood friends, Kyoko Toshino and Yui Funami, who are a year older than her. She shares a close, long-standing bond with them, having played a protective role for a crying Kyoko when they were younger. Her classmate, Chinatsu Yoshikawa, is also a close friend, though their relationship has complicated moments, including Chinatsu once stealing Akari’s first kiss as practice and creating disturbing drawings that cause Akari to faint. At home, she is the subject of an intense, obsessive adoration from her older sister, Akane, who collects items belonging to Akari. Despite being the target of constant teasing about her lack of presence, Akari is genuinely loved by all her peers, who show their affection in various ways.

Throughout the series, Akari shows subtle development. While the jokes about her being invisible remain a staple, the narrative eventually softens this gag, giving her more visibility and highlighting her natural sweetness as a core part of the group's dynamic. She remains eternally positive in the face of her frequent bad luck and misfortune, demonstrating a resilience that is remarkable. While she has no special powers in a literal sense, she possesses a few notable comedic abilities. The most prominent is her ability to become functionally invisible due to her lack of presence, a trait so strong it is often treated as a supernatural power. She also displays surprising physical durability, surviving comic accidents such as falls from cliffs and explosions without injury. Furthermore, her hair buns are frequently used as props for jokes, sometimes being imagined as detachable missiles that she can fire.
