Live action TV
Description
Guillermo Gutierrez, known by the nickname Memo, is a human character from the 2018 live-action film Bumblebee, which is part of the Transformers movie continuity. He is a teenager living in the coastal town of Brighton Falls, California, during the year 1987. Memo works at a churros stand called Quique's Churros on the Brighton Falls Boardwalk. He is characterized as being somewhat awkward and is a self-described science fiction fan, with his interests including reading magazines like GoBots Magazine.
Memo's primary motivation throughout the story is his genuine, if initially clumsy, romantic interest in his neighbor, Charlie Watson. He repeatedly attempts to introduce himself and ask her on a date, but his nerve often fails him. His motivations shift from simply wanting to connect with Charlie to a strong sense of loyalty and bravery. Upon discovering that she is protecting an alien robot, he chooses to help her despite the immense danger, driven by his burgeoning friendship with her and a desire to do the right thing.
In the story, Memo serves as Charlie's main human ally and confidant. His role begins as a shy neighbor with a crush, but he quickly becomes an integral part of Charlie's quest to protect the Autobot Bumblebee. After accidentally walking into Charlie's garage and seeing the robot for the first time, he is sworn to secrecy and becomes a partner in her adventures. His involvement ranges from participating in a poorly planned revenge prank to joining her on a dangerous mission to rescue Bumblebee from a top-secret military organization and hostile Decepticons.
Memo's key relationships are central to his character. His relationship with Charlie Watson evolves from one-sided admiration to a strong, trusting friendship built on shared, life-threatening experiences. He is consistently supportive of her, even when she is grieving the loss of her father. He also forms a unique bond with Bumblebee, the Autobot. Though initially terrified, he quickly accepts him and even helps Charlie repair and reactivate him at a crucial moment. A minor but telling relationship is with his mother, whom he asks an army officer to call after the final battle, highlighting his continued connection to his ordinary life.
Memo experiences notable development from an awkward, insecure teenager to a brave and reliable friend. Initially, he can barely speak to Charlie without panicking, internally psyching himself up with mantras like "you're not a nerd." As the plot progresses, he overcomes his timidity in the face of far greater threats than social rejection. He selflessly stays behind to delay a squad of armed soldiers, an act that allows Charlie and Bumblebee to escape and save the day, even though his attempt to hold them off is unsuccessful. This demonstrates his growth from a passive admirer to an active hero.
Memo does not possess any superhuman or extraordinary abilities. His notable skills and attributes are his loyalty, his growing courage, and his practical knowledge. As a local and a fan of science fiction, he is quick to accept the reality of alien robots. He helps provide a distraction, assists in hiding Bumblebee, and uses his own knowledge to help Charlie locate the air base where their friend is being held. His most significant contribution is his willingness to put himself in harm's way for the sake of his friends, proving that his value lies in his character rather than any special power.
