Description
Rin Shiraki works as a courtesan in Kure's wartime red-light district. Her unhappy childhood once led her to seek refuge on the rooftop of Suzu Urano's grandparents' home, where a brief encounter with the young Suzu, involving an offered piece of watermelon, established a subtle early link between them.

Years later, after Suzu marries Shusaku Hojo and becomes lost in Kure, Rin formally meets her. Despite their different social standings, Rin provides Suzu guidance and friendship, sharing her philosophy on finding one's place. Unbeknownst to Suzu at first, Rin previously had a romantic relationship with Shusaku. When Suzu later learns of this past connection, it creates underlying tension, straining her relationship with Shusaku as Suzu feels inferior to Rin yet remains deeply concerned for her wellbeing.

During U.S. air raids on Kure, Rin's neighborhood suffers heavy bombardment. Learning of the destruction in Rin's district, Suzu urges Shusaku to check on Rin's safety. Suzu later discovers Rin's brothel completely destroyed, confirming Rin's death in the attacks. This loss represents one of Suzu's many personal tragedies amidst the widespread devastation of war, highlighting the indiscriminate impact of conflict across social strata. Rin's character arc illustrates the fragile connections formed during wartime and the abrupt erasure of individual lives within larger historical tragedies.
