Description
Detective Hide Yoshida, also known as Lieutenant Hide Yoshida, is a character from the live-action film Pokémon Detective Pikachu. He is a male police officer with black hair and brown eyes, working in the Ryme City police department. As a well-known detective on the force, he holds the rank of lieutenant and is a figure of experience and authority within Ryme City. His residence and primary place of work are in Ryme City, a unique metropolis where humans and Pokémon live together without the use of Poké Balls or traditional training battles.

Yoshida's personality is characterized by a professional and gruff exterior that masks a more caring and understanding nature. He appears stern and no-nonsense, particularly when dealing with police work, and he becomes visibly annoyed when Tim Goodman involves himself in dangerous activities, such as underground Pokémon fights. However, this stern demeanor is not his whole character. In moments that require sensitivity, such as when delivering tragic news, he shows a softer, more compassionate side. This duality is also reflected in his choice of partner Pokémon, a male Snubbull. While the Snubbull has an intimidating and angry appearance, Yoshida insists that it is, in fact, very gentle and adorable on the inside. The Snubbull is constantly by Yoshida's side, assisting him with his duties, and the pair share a close partnership.

The motivations and role of Detective Yoshida in the story are primarily tied to his duty as a police lieutenant. When the film begins, it is Yoshida who formally informs Tim Goodman of his father Harry's apparent death in a car crash. He performs this duty with a degree of respect and personal history, giving Tim the keys to his late father's apartment and revealing that he worked closely with Harry, whom he describes as a legend in the precinct. Yoshida genuinely believes Harry is dead, and when Tim later returns with the theory that his father might still be alive, Yoshida is skeptical and shows Tim the evidence of the crash to dissuade him from a potentially dangerous and futile investigation. His key relationships are with the late Harry Goodman and his son, Tim. He serves as a link to Harry's past life as a detective and as an authority figure who both warns and watches over Tim as he delves deeper into the city's mysteries. He later appears at the Ryme City Pokémon parade, a public event celebrating the city's unique culture, where he is seen in proximity to the city's leadership.

Throughout the film, Yoshida does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation but his initial assumptions are proven wrong. Despite his skepticism, Tim and Pikachu's investigation eventually proves that Harry is indeed alive. In the film's climax, Yoshida, like many other citizens, is caught in the release of the R substance, a gas that forces humans and Pokémon to fuse together, at the parade. He is merged with his Snubbull during this chaotic event, a condition that is later reversed by the legendary Pokémon Mewtwo. His development is less about a change in personality and more about a vindication of Tim's quest and surviving the disaster that befalls the city. Detective Yoshida does not possess any superhuman abilities, but his notable skills include his investigative experience as a police lieutenant and his deep familiarity with the criminal underbelly and workings of Ryme City.
