Description
Detective Hideo Yoshida is a police lieutenant who works in Ryme City, a metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in harmony. He is a local law enforcement officer who held a close working relationship with Harry Goodman, a fellow detective and the father of protagonist Tim Goodman. Hailing from Ryme City itself, Yoshida has brown eyes and black hair, and his primary Pokémon partner is a male Snubbull who is constantly by his side.
In terms of personality, Yoshida presents a professional and composed exterior, befitting his role as a police lieutenant. He is a serious man who can become visibly frustrated or angry, particularly when civilians involve themselves in dangerous police matters, as seen when Tim begins investigating his father’s disappearance. Despite this stern demeanor, he is not unkind. When delivering the news of Harry’s death to Tim, he handles the situation with a degree of sensitivity, assuring the young man that his estranged father truly cared about him. This duality is mirrored in his relationship with his own Pokémon; while Snubbull has a fierce and intimidating appearance that compliments Yoshida’s no-nonsense attitude, the lieutenant acknowledges that the Fairy-type is actually adorable on the inside. Similarly, Yoshida maintains an intimidating presence when dealing with suspects, yet softens in more personal or diplomatic situations, such as offering condolences.
Motivation drives Yoshida to uphold the law in Ryme City and to seek the truth regarding the death of his colleague. Initially convinced that Harry Goodman perished in a fiery car crash, Yoshida’s primary role in the story is to inform Tim of this tragedy and urge him to accept the official record. When Tim returns with the unlikely claim that his father is still alive, Yoshida refuses to believe him, going so far as to pull up surveillance footage of the accident to prove his point and dissuade Tim from pursuing a dangerous path. He is motivated by a desire to protect Harry’s son from the same fate, though he is ultimately unaware of the deeper conspiracy orchestrated by Howard Clifford.
The detective’s position in the narrative is that of a supporting character and an authority figure who establishes the central mystery at the start of the adventure. He serves as the initial source of exposition, giving Tim the keys to his late father’s apartment and providing details about the fatal incident. Later in the story, as the conspiracy unfolds, Yoshida becomes a victim of the plot rather than an active participant in solving it. During the Ryme City Pokémon parade, a massive release of the R chemical agent causes him to be forcibly fused with his own Snubbull. This event highlights the scale of the threat facing the city, as even the police force is overwhelmed by the antagonist’s scheme.
Regarding development, Hideo Yoshida remains largely a static character; his core beliefs do not shift significantly during the film. He starts as a pragmatic detective who accepts Harry’s death as fact and ends the story freed from the fusion caused by Mewtwo’s power. His most significant relationship is with his former partner, Harry Goodman, whose investigative legacy looms large over the plot. His interactions with Tim are primarily professional, treating the younger Goodman as the bereaved son of a respected friend rather than as a colleague. As a police officer, his notable ability lies in his investigative knowledge and access to police resources, such as the crash site footage. While he does not engage in high-octane action, his competence is demonstrated through his steady presence and his effective partnership with his Snubbull, whom he relies upon to perform his duties.
