Description
In Fullmetal Alchemist, a Chimera is a creature created through a branch of bio-alchemy that fuses two or more different living beings into a single new form. While the synthesis of non-human chimeras is a legitimate, albeit difficult, field of study, the creation of a human chimera, which involves fusing a human with an animal, is considered a forbidden form of human transmutation. These creations often display physical traits and abilities derived from the animals used in their creation.

The character most famously associated with the term Chimera is Nina Tucker, the young daughter of State Alchemist Shou Tucker. Desperate to retain his state certification, Shou Tucker used his own daughter and her pet dog, Alexander, as the components for a new chimera capable of human speech. This tragic event serves as a pivotal moment in the story, as the Elric brothers befriend Nina only to discover the horrifying truth of her transformation. The chimera retains Nina's consciousness and ability to speak, calling out to the brothers in a state of suffering, which deeply scars them and reinforces the severe consequences of alchemical hubris. This incident is not unique, as it is revealed that Tucker had performed the same procedure on his wife years prior to achieve his original state certification.

Beyond the Tuckers, other human chimeras appear as significant characters. A group of them are affiliated with the homunculus Greed, operating out of a bar called the Devil's Nest. These chimeras, including individuals named Martel, Dorchet, Loa, and Bido, have more stable human-like forms but can partially transform to access enhanced physical abilities, such as claws or reptilian traits. Their motivations often stem from a desire for freedom or to regain their humanity, leading some to align with various factions within the military or with the Elric brothers. Unlike the monstrous, tormented creation of Shou Tucker, these chimeras are presented as coherent individuals making their own choices within the larger conflict, though they are still marked by the unethical experiments that created them.

The abilities of a chimera depend entirely on the species from which they are composed. Standard, non-human chimeras are often used as powerful guardians, possessing the strength and ferocity of beasts like lions or reptiles. Human chimeras demonstrate a wide spectrum of abilities. Some, like the failed experiments, are warped, incomplete beings in constant pain with limited social function. More successful human chimeras, like those working for the military or Greed, can exhibit enhanced senses, superhuman strength, and the ability to manifest animalistic features such as sharp claws, fangs, or armored hides. The most advanced successes can switch between a fully human appearance and a powerful man-beast hybrid form at will. These individuals serve as soldiers, spies, or enforcers, their existence a dark testament to the military's secret and inhumane research programs.
