Description
Fishbone D, also known simply as Fishbone, is a Hollow who appears at the very beginning of the Bleach story, serving as the first antagonist encountered by the protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki. He is a minor character whose attack on the Kurosaki family clinic becomes the immediate catalyst for Ichigo’s transformation into a substitute Soul Reaper.

In terms of background, Fishbone D is a low-level Hollow, a lost soul consumed by its own negative emotions and chain of fate, which has transformed it into a monstrous being. He is drawn to Karakura Town by the unusually high concentration of spiritual pressure emanating from Ichigo Kurosaki. On the night he appears, he first preys upon the spirit of a young girl who had died in the area before setting his sights on the Kurosaki family. His name is descriptive of his appearance, as he is a large, humanoid Hollow standing roughly four and a half meters tall, with several aquatic features. He possesses a prominent fish-like mask covering his head, a dorsal fin running down his back, and a body covered in dark grey, scale-like stripes. His shoulders and arms are also plated with sections of his mask. The D in his name is simply an identifier, as his full designation is Fishbone D.

Regarding his personality and motivations, Fishbone D, like most common Hollows, does not exhibit a complex personality or unique motivations. He is driven by the primal Hollow instincts to hunt, devour living souls and spirits (Pluses), and destroy that which radiates high spiritual energy. His intelligence is low, and his behavior is purely aggressive and predatory. There is no indication of any higher thought process, personal vendetta, or specific goal beyond consuming the powerful spirit he senses at the Kurosaki Clinic.

Fishbone D's role in the story is strictly functional but crucial. He is the first Hollow shown in the manga and his assault sets the entire plot of the series into motion. When he attacks Ichigo’s family, Ichigo tries to fight him with a baseball bat but is easily overpowered. To save Ichigo and his family, the Soul Reaper Rukia Kuchiki attempts to intervene but is severely wounded. In a desperate act, she transfers her Soul Reaper powers to Ichigo, transforming him into a Soul Reaper. With his newfound abilities, Ichigo effortlessly defeats Fishbone D, purifying him and sending his soul to the Soul Society. This event leaves Ichigo as a temporary Soul Reaper and strands Rukia in the human world without her powers, forming the central premise of the early story arcs.

Key relationships are minimal due to his brief existence. His primary and only significant relationship is as an antagonist to Ichigo Kurosaki. He is the first monster that Ichigo must face as a nascent hero. He also has a purely adversarial relationship with Rukia Kuchiki, whom he wounds in her attempt to protect Ichigo. His attack also directly endangers Ichigo’s family, including his father Isshin and his twin sisters Karin and Yuzu. There are slight differences between the manga and anime versions of these interactions; in the manga, he kills the young girl Plus before grabbing Yuzu, while in the anime, he merely chases the girl and instead grabs Karin.

As a one-time antagonist who is purified in his first and only appearance, Fishbone D has no character development. He appears, is defeated, and ceases to exist as a Hollow, his soul moving on to the afterlife. He is never referenced again in a meaningful way.

Despite his low rank, Fishbone D possesses several notable abilities common to Hollows. He has considerable spiritual power, which surprises Rukia, a seated officer-level Soul Reaper, by its intensity. Fitting his large size, he has enhanced strength, able to send Ichigo and Rukia flying with a single punch. One of his distinctive abilities is an extendable neck, which he can stretch over several meters to deliver a powerful bite to an enemy at a distance. Most notably, he demonstrates the standard Hollow ability of dimensional healing, where he can retreat through a portal to the dimension of Hueco Mundo. A few seconds in this space are enough to heal wounds he sustained in battle, such as when Rukia slices his arm. Upon returning to the human world fully healed, he resumes his attack. In the live-action film adaptation of Bleach, Fishbone D is also depicted as being able to fire a Cero, a high-powered energy blast typical of more advanced Hollows, though this ability is not featured in the original manga or anime.
