Description
Merlin is a figure from Arthurian legend who appears in the film The Last Knight, set in fifth-century Britain. He is widely believed by King Arthur and his court to be a wizard of immense power, but in truth he possesses no genuine magical abilities. Instead, he is a drunkard, womanizer, and charlatan who has built his reputation on deception. Despite these flaws, Merlin is one of the few humans aware of the ancient Cybertronian refugees known as the Knights of Iacon, who have been hiding on Earth. During a desperate battle against the Saxons in the year 484, King Arthur calls on Merlin for aid. Merlin, while heavily drinking, detours to the hidden Cybertronian ship and pleads with the knights for help. He admits his own dishonesty but expresses a sincere desire to change the world for the better, even offering to give up wine and money, though he jokingly refuses to give up women. Moved by his words, the Knights of Iacon entrust him with a Cybertronian staff and combine into a massive dragon-like form called Dragonstorm. Merlin leads this creature onto the battlefield, where it swiftly defeats the Saxon forces, ensuring Arthur’s victory.

The staff bonds to Merlin’s DNA, meaning only he and his direct descendants can wield it. He is charged with protecting it until a great evil arises. The staff grants its user access to highly advanced Cybertronian technology, which to medieval people appears as magic. After his death, Merlin is laid to rest in a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden beneath the ocean, with the staff placed beside his sarcophagus. The Knights of Iacon stand eternal guard over his remains. Centuries later, his last descendant, the Oxford professor Viviane Wembly, discovers his tomb and retrieves the staff, ultimately fulfilling his duty to protect Earth from the threat posed by the Cybertronian sorceress Quintessa. Merlin’s legacy thus shapes the central conflict of the story, as his staff becomes the key to either saving or destroying the planet. His personality is marked by a contradiction between his self-serving, dishonest nature and a brief, genuine wish to do something meaningful. He has no supernatural abilities of his own; his reputation as a magician is entirely due to the alien technology he was entrusted with.
