Description
The Prince of Darkness is the male protagonist of Shironeko Project: Zero Chronicle and one of the two central characters alongside the Light King Iris. He is an unnamed young man whose real name is never revealed, and he is known only by his title as the heir to the Black Kingdom's throne. He is characterized as a man of few words, partly because he is not skilled at expressing himself, and his quiet, introverted nature is shaped by a deeply traumatic past. He is also kindhearted and thoughtful, with a strong protective instinct toward other people, and he carries himself with a quiet wisdom that sets him apart from the more aggressive figures around him.
His background begins in a remote border settlement of the Black Kingdom, where he lived a modest life until a monster attack destroyed his village and killed all of its inhabitants. As the sole survivor, he was digging graves for the dead when he was discovered by Skears, a mysterious swordsman in black armor and a former candidate for the Dark King's succession. Skears took him in, and the boy began training at the Skears estate under the dark knight Valas, who served as his master in swordsmanship. He eventually entered the succession tournament as the representative of the Skears family, where he faced and defeated the rival candidate Adel, and through his hard training he was named the successor to the King of Darkness, becoming the Dark Prince.
The Prince's central motivation is peace. He wants a Black Kingdom that is not in constant war with the White Kingdom, and before he is willing to become the next Dark King, he vows to find a way to protect people from being killed in war. This desire for a peaceful world drives his actions throughout the story. When he is sent to the White Kingdom as an envoy alongside Adel to deliver an alliance proposal against the destructive being Bal, he meets Iris for the first time. Despite initial suspicion from the White Kingdom's knight captain Faios, the Prince and Iris develop mutual respect, and the two make a promise to work together to bring a peaceful balance between light and darkness. His growing bond with Iris also leads him to question the very nature of light and darkness and how the two kingdoms relate to one another.
In the story, the Prince serves as the bridge between the two kingdoms during the joint struggle against Bal, who threatens to destroy both light and dark alike. After the Bal crisis, however, the Dark King reveals his true schemes, and the Prince learns that the peace he hoped for was never intended by the ruler he serves. When the Dark King's treachery is exposed, the Prince unlocks a hidden true power that had been sealed within him and turns against the Dark King's designs. His development traces a clear arc from a silent, grief-stricken survivor to a disciplined successor candidate, and finally to someone who breaks with the established order in order to honor the promise he made to Iris and protect the possibility of peace.
His key relationships define much of his journey. Iris is his most important connection, as the person with whom he shares a vow of balance and mutual trust across the divide between their kingdoms. Groza is his fiancée and a constant companion, fighting alongside him during missions such as the hunt for the powerful monster Baphomet. Valas is his teacher, who trains him in combat and helps him grow into a worthy successor. Skears is the mentor who gave him a second chance at life and set him on the path to the throne, though Skears appears primarily through the Prince's memories. Adel is his former rival in the succession tournament, who later aligns with the Dark King's extreme views and attempts to destroy the White Kingdom from within, leading to a confrontation in which the Prince cuts him down, only to discover that Adel was a decoy.
In terms of abilities, the Prince is a highly trained warrior who fights with a large black great sword, reflecting the berserker style of combat associated with his role. His swordsmanship was honed under Valas, and he proves himself capable in the succession tournament and in battle against powerful monsters and enemies. His most notable power is the hidden true strength he releases after learning of the Dark King's schemes, a latent force that allows him to stand against the might of the Dark King himself. His combat abilities are matched by his resilience and his determination to fight not for conquest but for the protection of others, which ultimately becomes his defining strength as a character.
