Description
Mikado Ryūgamine left his uneventful rural life in Saitama for Ikebukuro, seeking adventure at his childhood friend Masaomi Kida's invitation. He presents an unremarkable appearance: short black hair, grayish-blue eyes, small stature, and typically wears casual clothes like a green and white jacket with jeans. Initially polite, soft-spoken, and naive, Mikado harbors deep frustration with his own normalcy and envies others' unique roles, fueling a desire to change. This conflict creates a dual nature – a timid exterior masking a colder, calculated personality theorized by Izaya Orihara and Aoba Kuronuma to be his true self.

While still in Saitama, Mikado co-founded the Dollars as an anonymous, rule-free online forum, a prank that spiraled beyond his control as members engaged in crime. He remained an admin, attempting community corrections after other founders left. In Ikebukuro, he became entangled in the city's chaos, encountering supernatural entities like the headless Celty Sturluson and conflicts involving yakuza and rival gangs.

Frustrated by the Dollars' lack of control during the Akane and Blue Squares arcs, Mikado accepted leadership of the Blue Squares gang, aiming to impose order through force. This shift saw him manipulate and intimidate, exemplified by orchestrating a massive Dollars gathering to overwhelm Namie Yagiri's subordinates using the group's anonymity.

His darker traits escalated later. He stabbed Aoba Kuronuma's hand to assert dominance and calmly immolated the criminal Kisuke Adabashi with gasoline, shocking Masaomi with his cruelty. Mikado justified such actions as necessary ruthlessness to seize power, protect friends, and control a lawless environment.

Central relationships with Masaomi Kida and Anri Sonohara strained due to his evolution. While admiring Anri, his actions increasingly prioritized ideological goals over personal bonds. Masaomi, once protective, grew alienated by Mikado's descent into moral ambiguity. Mikado's journey illustrates a shift from idealism to pragmatism, embracing violence and manipulation to reshape Ikebukuro. His online alias "TarouTanaka" symbolizes this dual existence as an unassuming student navigating the city's digital and physical battlegrounds.
