TV-Series
Description
Akari Hyuuga is a first-year student at Tōmi East High School and a friend of the protagonist, Yuu Koito. Physically, she is notably the tallest among the main characters, standing around 170 centimeters, and her athletic build is evident in her upright posture and active presence. She is a dedicated member of the school’s basketball team and brings the same energy and passion to her sport as she does to her friendships. In a distinctive touch, she often goes through her school day without wearing a blazer, even in early spring.

On the surface, Akari presents herself as cheerful, lively, and energetic. She is friendly and engages enthusiastically with those around her, but this extroverted demeanor conceals a more sensitive and vulnerable interior. She feels emotions deeply, particularly when it comes to romance, and despite her generally bright outlook, she is capable of being profoundly hurt. Loyalty is one of her defining traits, whether toward her friends or her own feelings. Her academic performance is generally average, but she has an unexpected talent for biology, where her grades are excellent. Outside of schoolwork, she prefers reading manga over other forms of literature.

Akari’s primary motivation at the start of the story is her long-standing crush on Ryūsuke Ōgaki, an upperclassman she admired during middle school. She decided to attend Tōmi East High School specifically to be at the same school as him. Before the Golden Week holidays, she confessed her feelings to him, but he rejected her politely, stating that he wanted to focus entirely on basketball. Despite this, Akari resolved to wait for him, holding onto the hope that things might change after he finished with his sport.

Her role in the narrative is closely tied to this unrequited love and the process of moving past it. While helping with preparations for the school festival, she, Yuu, and fellow student Suguru Doujima discovered a mistake in the basketball team’s paperwork. This led to Akari being found crying after a significant emotional setback. She had been asked by the girls’ basketball team captain, Serizawa, to switch their assigned duties for the festival. Through this, she learned that Ōgaki and Serizawa had been in a secret relationship since their first year of high school, keeping it hidden out of consideration for the team. The rejection she had accepted as being about basketball was, in reality, a deception, and the discovery that Ōgaki had not been honest with her caused her world to collapse.

Beyond her romantic interests, Akari maintains several key relationships. She is a close friend of Yuu Koito and Koyomi Kanou, sharing a class with them and forming a supportive trio. After her heartbreak, the person who steps into her life most significantly is Suguru Doujima. When Doujima witnessed her distress and became angry on her behalf, even wanting to confront Ōgaki directly, Akari was touched by his protectiveness. This moment marks the beginning of a shift in her feelings, and she slowly begins to open up to him.

Over the course of the story, Akari undergoes notable development. She eventually overcomes her lingering feelings for Ōgaki, moving past the pain of the betrayal and her long-held fantasy of waiting for him. In the final stages of the series, she appears more mature, with a changed outfit and a different atmosphere about her. She is now in a romantic relationship with Doujima, and her friends gently tease her about their close bond. In terms of abilities, her athletic talent is her most prominent strength, making her a valued member of the basketball team, while her surprising proficiency in biology stands out as her singular academic skill.
