TV-Series
Description
Akari Hyuuga is a first-year student at Tōmi-Ost-Oberschule, the high school where Bloom Into You takes place. She is a friend and classmate of the protagonist Yuu Koito and Koyomi Kanou, having attended the same middle school with them. Physically, Akari is notably tall, standing at approximately 170 centimeters, which makes her one of the tallest girls among the main characters. A member of the school's basketball team, her athletic background is evident in her upright posture and active demeanor. In a distinctive touch to her school uniform, she typically chooses not to wear the blazer, even during the cooler spring months.
Her personality is defined by a contrast between her outward energy and her inner sensitivity. Akari generally appears cheerful, lively, and friendly, engaging with her passions, such as her involvement in the basketball club, with great enthusiasm. However, beneath this vivacious exterior lies a vulnerable and sensitive heart, particularly when it comes to matters of love and rejection. She is also portrayed as someone who is not particularly book-smart; her academic performance is mostly average, though she does have an unexpected talent for the subject of biology. According to Yuu, her reading material consists exclusively of manga.
Akari's primary motivation early in the story is rooted in a crush she developed during middle school on an upperclassman named Ryūsuke Ōgaki, who was also on the basketball team. Her feelings for him were so strong that she chose to apply to Tōmi-Ost-Oberschule specifically because he attended there. Shortly before the Golden Week holidays of her first year, she confessed her love to him. Ōgaki politely rejected her, explaining that he wished to focus entirely on basketball, but Akari resolved to wait for him until he was finished with the sport. This plan was shattered when she inadvertently discovered that Ōgaki was already in a secret relationship with Serizawa, the captain of the girls' basketball team. The revelation occurred during the preparations for the school festival when Serizawa asked Akari to switch duties, wishing to work alongside Ōgaki herself. The discovery leaves Akari heartbroken and she is found crying by Yuu and Suguru Doujima.
This painful event serves as a turning point for Akari's role in the story and her personal development. The impulsive Doujima is angered by the situation and wants to confront Ōgaki, a gesture of solidarity that deeply touches Akari. Her friendship with Yuu and Koyomi provides a supportive foundation, but it is her budding connection with Doujima that becomes central to her character arc. As she processes her heartbreak, she slowly develops new romantic feelings for Doujima. By the conclusion of the series, Akari has moved past her old crush entirely. She appears more mature and is now in a happy relationship with Doujima, a development that her friends good-naturedly tease her about. Her notable abilities lie in her athleticism, being a dedicated and skilled member of the basketball club.
