Description
Agott, also known as Agathe in some translations, is a young apprentice witch under the tutelage of Qifrey. She is a member of the prestigious Arklaum family, a lineage that has served as the librarians of the Tower of Tomes for generations. Her goal is to one day develop her skills enough to become a librarian in that tower and prove her worth to her family.
In terms of appearance, Agott has dark curly hair, which is often shaded with a dark purple hue, and purple eyes. Her expression is typically serious and brooding, characterized by half-lidded eyes and a pouty face. She wears the standard apprentice robes of Qifrey's atelier. As a younger child, her hair was notably longer, reaching the middle of her back.
Personality-wise, Agott is a self-conscious and withdrawn individual, but she is also highly ambitious. She suffers from deep-seated self-esteem issues and has a strong aversion to being perceived as average or inadequate. This insecurity often manifests as frustration directed at those she considers inferior or naive about the true difficulty of mastering magic. She is extremely serious about her studies, frequently waking early or pulling all-nighters to prepare for tests and examinations. Paradoxically, despite her considerable skill and hard work, she has a tendency to fixate on her shortcomings and the things she cannot yet do, leading to a persistent feeling that her abilities are not good enough.
Agott comes from the famous Arklaum house, but she is considered something of a black sheep. A rumor circulates that she attempted to pass off another person's magic as her own during her debut, a transgression that led to her estrangement from her family. Flashbacks have shown that her work was also perceived as mediocre by her relatives, which is likely why she was sent to study under a different teacher, Qifrey, instead of within her own family. Her relationship with her mother, Adina, is particularly strained, though Agott still secretly desires her mother's recognition and hopes to one day show her that she is a capable witch.
Within the story, Agott is one of Qifrey's four apprentices and was his first student. She respects him as her teacher but is often frustrated with his methods, feeling that her progress is too slow for her liking. Her most significant relationship is with the protagonist, Coco. Initially, Agott looked down on Coco for being an outsider with a naive understanding of magic. She acted harshly toward her, even forcing her to take the dangerous first test, the Consent of the Crown, to prove herself worthy of being in the atelier. However, as the story progresses and they face challenges together, such as escaping a dragon and saving travelers, Agott's perception of Coco changes. She begins to see her as an equal and a worthy witch, and their rivalry slowly develops into a strong friendship built on mutual respect.
Agott undergoes significant development throughout the narrative. She begins as an isolated, insecure girl who lashes out at others to protect her own fragile ego. Through her interactions with Coco and her other fellow apprentices, she learns to cooperate and begins to overcome her rigid preconceptions. Her arc involves learning to value her own strengths instead of only focusing on her perceived failures, and opening herself up to friendship and trust.
In terms of notable abilities, Agott is a highly skilled and knowledgeable magic user, even among Qifrey's talented apprentices. Her specialty is creating strong and powerful spells. She is methodical, studious, and has a deep theoretical understanding of magic, which contrasts with Coco's more intuitive and experimental approach. She is also proficient in practical magic, as shown when she allows Coco to borrow her Soar Boots, a magical item she created.
