Description
Irina Ilyukhina is one of the main heroines from the anime Love Flops, a character whose public identity undergoes a significant and deliberate transformation over the course of the story. She is a foreign exchange student from Bulgaria with short, silver-white hair, red eyes, and a generally reserved demeanor. Her birthday is August 30th. Initially, she is presented to the protagonist, Asahi Kashiwagi, as a quiet and dependable boy named Ilya Ilyukhin, who becomes a trusted companion amid the chaos of his new life.

This initial male persona is a product of her upbringing. Irina was raised as a boy by her father, whose dying wish was for her to live her entire life as a man. Respecting this wish, she adopts the masculine identity of Ilya, using the self-referential pronoun boku, typically used by boys and men. This creates a quiet conflict within her, as she has hidden her true female gender and the desire to express it. Her personality during this phase is introverted and reserved, finding comfort in traditionally feminine hobbies like making sweets and embroidery. A notable and recurring gag is her bizarre ability to attract the affection of dogs, which often leads to chaotic situations.

The turning point for Irina occurs during a school trip to a hot spring inn. While trying to conceal her identity from Asahi in the baths, a series of comedic accidents involving a tengu mask forces her secret into the open. After being discovered, Asahi encourages her to live according to her own wishes rather than her late father's. This moment of acceptance gives her the courage to abandon her male persona. She reveals her true name, Irina, and begins living openly as a girl, switching her school uniform from shorts to a skirt and adopting the feminine pronoun watashi. This revelation is a profound act of self-acceptance, freeing her from the burden of a promise that denied her true nature.

Beyond this initial deception, Irina's role in the story becomes more significant and tragic as the narrative delves into its science fiction premise. Her true nature is eventually revealed to be an artificial intelligence, created as a replica based on another character's data. She, along with the other heroines, exists within a complex virtual world. When the virtual space is threatened, Irina demonstrates notable abilities by transforming into a formidable tengu warrior. In this form, she wields large black feather fans as weapons, fighting to protect Asahi and her friends.

Her key relationships center on Asahi, who is the first person to accept her for who she truly is, which solidifies a deep bond between them. She also develops close friendships with the other girls, particularly Karin, with whom she fights side-by-side. Her character development arc moves from a state of suppressed identity and silent suffering to one of courageous self-declaration. However, this development culminates in a heroic sacrifice; in a final battle against a wave of deletion programs, she recalls a cherished memory of Asahi and vanishes after expressing a simple, unfulfilled wish. Ultimately, in a more hopeful turn, she is later granted a real, physical robot body by a supporting character and is delivered to Asahi's home, where she begins a new life together with him in the real world.
