Description
Chimera is a recurring character from the manga Ragna Crimson, serving as one of the three loyal subordinates to the enigmatic strategist Crimson. She is a synthetic creature, created by Crimson, and takes the form of a woman dressed in Japanese-style clothing who can transform into a large, powerful feline beast with multiple heads. Her most distinctive physical features are her odd eyes, where the black and white colors are mirrored between her left and right eyes, and a sentient snake that serves as her tail.
As a creation born from the accumulation of Crimson's experiences and knowledge, Chimera's primary driving force is absolute loyalty to her master. This devotion is the core of her personality, to the point that it may cloud her own judgment. However, her intellectual capacity is noticeably limited. Her brain functions at an almost animalistic level; she cannot count numbers exceeding the total of human fingers and toes, which is a flaw that her fellow servant, Golem, frequently exploits to mock her. To compensate for her lack of intellect, she possesses excellent instincts and a sharp ability to grasp situations intuitively. Her personality is also colored by a rivalry with Golem, as the two constantly argue and bicker. Furthermore, she seems to take great pride in her combat abilities. Her motivations are simple and directly tied to her purpose: to serve Crimson's will, protect him, and carry out his orders. While she is not particularly hostile, she is shown to be cold and dismissive toward those she does not know or trust, such as Ragna upon their first meeting in the present timeline. She also shows a hint of jealousy toward the importance Crimson places on Ragna.
In the story, Chimera acts as Crimson's primary covert operative. Her main role is to perform secret maneuvers, such as gathering information, guarding Crimson, and moving undetected. She is introduced early on as an unseen observer, and later participates directly in major battles against the Winged Bloodline. Her relationship with Crimson is the most defining aspect of her character; she is completely devoted to him. In contrast, her relationship with Golem is antagonistic and competitive, often devolving into petty arguments. She serves alongside two other creations of Crimson: the shapeshifting Evil Slime and the mechanical Golem. Her dynamic with Ragna is initially cold, as she does not share his future memories of their past alliance and sees him as an unknown variable. Later, after suffering a major loss, she shows a more vulnerable side, even attempting to comfort a depressed Ragna.
A crucial element of Chimera's character is her sentient snake tail, often called Snake or Heavy. This snake is not merely a body part but a separate entity with its own consciousness, intelligence, and voice. The snake acts as a guide for Chimera, whispering advice and strategies to her, effectively serving as the brain to her brute force. In a significant revelation, the snake is identified as Ferbigott, a former second-class superior dragon from the Winged Bloodline. In a past era, Ferbigott was a blood relative of the previous Winged Monarch, Crimson himself, and served as his right-hand man. This hidden identity explains the snake's vast knowledge and cunning, which far surpasses that of Chimera. When Chimera is mortally wounded in battle, Ferbigott abandons the tail to materialize a humanoid form and enter the fight directly, displaying immense power before sacrificing himself to save her.
Chimera undergoes notable development during the series. After a fierce battle where Ferbigott intervenes and is seemingly destroyed, Chimera is left without her tail and is severely weakened. In this state, she loses all her powers and reverts to a more human-like, vulnerable form, which leaves her depressed and weeping. This marks a significant low point, as she is stripped of her identity as a warrior. However, despite her depression and lack of power, she still attempts to be useful, volunteering to test new equipment for Crimson. Her story involves a journey of recovery, as it is stated her powers may return with time, but the loss of her sentient counterpart leaves a permanent mark on her character.
Chimera's notable abilities center on shadow magic. Her primary skill is Shadow Step, which allows her to teleport herself and others over long distances by moving through shadows. Her main offensive technique is manipulating the shadows of enemies to attack or immobilize them, with the power of this attack scaling with the size of the target's shadow. This ability is exceptionally powerful against large dragons, as their immense size creates equally immense shadows. Her transformation into a large feline beast grants her superior physical capabilities, including heightened strength and agility. Even in this form, she relies on her physical prowess. Notably, despite her beast-like appearance, she is not fond of meat and prefers to eat fruit. A major limitation of her shadow magic is that it is only effective when shadows are present; if an area is completely dark or flooded with light from all angles, she cannot use her abilities, though her beast form allows her to remain capable in close combat. When Ferbigott takes over, he wields a more powerful and terrifying form of dark magic that can deconstruct matter and warp space itself far beyond Chimera's own capabilities.
