This isolation broke only upon meeting Helena des Armoises, who became his sole source of joy and connection. His deep affection for Helena morphed into a consuming obsession after she eloped with Franz Houtman, abandoning Abel and shattering him emotionally. This fixation drove him to orchestrate a brutal assault on the Houtman family ship, personally killing Franz Houtman.

A decade later, Abel's paramount objective is locating Fena Houtman, Helena's daughter, due to her striking resemblance to her mother. He employs ruthless methods, contracting pirate Grace O'Malley and her crew, the Rumble Rose, to capture Fena. Abel readily betrays allies, exemplified when he destroys O'Malley's ship using an experimental cannon after refusing payment, an act triggering Fena's traumatic memories. His operational style is coldly calculating and manipulative, often masking cruelty behind a facade of gentlemanly charm and politeness. He exhibits zero loyalty, discarding subordinates like Maxiver Jr., whom he orders executed for perceived failure.

Abel possesses notable combat skills, including exceptional marksmanship; he claims the ability to shoot the wings off a fly at ten paces using his distinctive triple-barreled pistol. He also demonstrates skill in portraiture, creating highly realistic paintings of Helena, underscoring his fixation. Physically, he is tall and slender with light blond hair and blue eyes. As his obsession deepens, his eyes occasionally appear red, signaling his deteriorating mental state. He consistently wears variations of a Royal Navy uniform: a blue military jacket with yellow epaulettes, a white feathered collar, light blue shirt, dark grey pants, and black boots.

His quest culminates on Eden. Consumed by delusion, Abel perceives Fena and Yukimaru as Helena and Franz. During a violent confrontation, Yukimaru severs Abel's arm, depicted with fiery effects. Abel attempts to kill both, declaring Fena useless now that he believes he has reached Helena. At this critical moment, a spectral manifestation of Helena materializes, resembling her youthful self surrounded by purple flames reminiscent of her execution.
