Description
Ban Klondike is the commanding boss of the Klondike Family, the most powerful mafia organization in the Kingdom of Fourland. He is a man in his fifties, standing at 184cm, with short gray hair and a physical appearance marked by a severely deformed eye and a beard, remnants of a traumatic past. While he is feared as a ruthless and冷酷非情 (cold-blooded) crime lord who stops at nothing to achieve his goals, he paradoxically maintains a personal code of showing kindness to women and children. His defining philosophy is the motto "All is for Family," which he uses to justify his empire of violence.
Ban's background is rooted in tragedy and a profound fall from grace. In his youth, he was a noble and dashing figure who fought crime alongside Theodore Constantine Pinochle as part of the first generation of High Card. The Klondikes were originally a family of honest politicians. This changed when Ban attempted a heroic sacrifice to save his father. Theodore stopped him, an act that resulted in Ban's disfigurement and the beginning of his darkness. The royal family later covered up his father's death, erasing his existence and branding him an "Un-person," which solidified Ban's transformation into a villain.
His primary motivation is revenge against the Fourland royal family and the High Card organization for erasing his father's legacy. He orchestrated the theft of the 52 X-Playing Cards from the royal castle and scattered them across the kingdom to incite chaos and destabilize the nation. He is also revealed to be the one who murdered Finn Oldman's parents, later manipulating Finn's brother, Tilt (Flann Oldman), into believing he was the culprit. This act forced Tilt into the Klondike Family and bound him to the dangerous King of Spades card.
Within the story, Ban serves as the central antagonist and the head of the primary opposing faction to the protagonists of High Card. His role is that of a Big Bad whose influence permeates the entire plot, though he ultimately serves as a Disc-One Final Boss, dying before the final confrontation with the entity San Galgano. His key relationships are complex. He shares a deep, strained history with Theodore Pinochle, as they were once friends who became bitter enemies over a difference in ideology regarding the use of the cards. He also holds a connection with Greg Young, another figure from their shared past.
Ban's character development follows an arc from a fallen hero to a vengeful villain, culminating in a redemptive sacrifice. He is a complex hypocrite; he condemns societal inequality while perpetuating violence, and claims moral high ground while causing widespread suffering. In his final act, he uses a forbidden technique called an X-Hand to reverse time and save Theodore's life. This act costs Ban his own life, and he dies with a smile, achieving a twisted form of atonement. His corpse is later desecrated by Tilt, who laments not being able to speak with him one last time.
Ban Klondike wields the King of Diamonds X-Playing Card, known as "Round and Round" or "Round & Round." This ability grants him the power to induce rotational motion in any object or person he touches. He uses this versatile ability strategically to spin projectiles, destabilize opponents, manipulate environmental elements, and even create rotational barriers, making him a formidable fighter who controls engagements indirectly rather than through brute force.
