Description
Garaku Utagawa is a fictional character from the anime and manga series Ayakashi Triangle. He is an ayakashi, a type of supernatural spirit, who was born as a tsukumogami from an artist's ink brush that came to life after prolonged use. His human identity is that of a famous and internationally recognized traditional Japanese painter, which allows him to move freely in the human world.

Garaku is a tall individual with a calm and sophisticated appearance, often wearing a beret and round glasses. He typically dresses in a traditional yukata, reflecting his origins in the Edo period, and carries a sketchbook and brush. His brown hair is short, with strands often falling across his face. A notable and recurring detail in his design is the presence of cat motifs on his belongings, a tribute to his original human owner who was a cat lover. This love for cats is a deeply ingrained personality trait that also influences his interactions with other characters who share this affection.

His personality is layered and somewhat enigmatic, often shifting depending on whether he is wearing his glasses. When he has his glasses on, he refers to himself as boku and presents a gentle, mild-mannered, and playful facade. When he removes them, he switches to the more assertive personal pronoun ore, and his demeanor becomes sharper and more direct. Despite an outward appearance of being carefree and jovial, Garaku is a cunning and calculating strategist capable of making quick decisions. He frequently tests the abilities of others, such as when he attacked Matsuri Kazamaki and his friends under a flimsy pretense simply to gauge their strength. While his actions can be unpredictable and sometimes seem antagonistic, he generally does not harbor genuine intentions to cause serious harm and maintains a relatively harmonious relationship with the main group.

The character's long history is marked by tragedy and a search for belonging. Born in the tumultuous Bakumatsu period of the late 19th century, he was orphaned upon the death of his owner and was subsequently despised and rejected by humans, who called him trash boy. To survive, he was forced to use his art to create forgeries and serve the powerful Dust King, a ruler of tsukumogami, living without true freedom. His life took a profound turn when he met a shrine maiden named Mei Hirasaka, who sealed away the Dust King and was the first person to show him kindness. He developed deep romantic feelings for her, but tragedy struck when Mei was chosen as a human sacrifice to stop a great flood. Garaku was powerless to save her and realized too late the depth of his love. The only request she had made of him was to paint her portrait, a task he had always avoided, fearing it would signal the end of their time together.

This unfulfilled promise drives his primary motivation in the story. Having learned that powerful shrine maidens can reincarnate while retaining memories of their past lives, Garaku's central goal is to find Mei's reincarnation to finally paint her portrait. He comes to the city of Komiko and becomes interested in Suzu Kanade, believing her to be the reincarnation of his lost love. In the present day, his role is that of a wandering ally and advisor, especially to Suzu, whom he helps to understand and master her powers as an ayakashi medium. His fame and popularity, amplified by modern social media, have granted him immense power, eventually surpassing even that of the Dust King who once oppressed him. This recognition fueling his strength is a unique trait of his ayakashi nature.

His key relationships are complex. He recognizes Shirogane, the white cat-like ayakashi, as a king, but his tendency for overly friendly physical contact often makes Shirogane uncomfortable and causes him to flee. Toward Matsuri Kazamaki, the main protagonist, he is not hostile and the two maintain a mostly cordial relationship, even though Garaku has been known to betray Matsuri's group when his own objectives demand it, such as in a conflict with the dark entity Kagemei. His feelings toward Kagemei, who was born from the shadows of his beloved Mei's heart, are complicated. He acknowledges that he cannot love this corrupted version of her, as she is too distorted from the person he once knew.

Garaku's most notable ability is his signature technique, the Art Reflects Reality Jutsu (also known as Gagenjutsu or Picture Manifestation Art). Using his brush, he can materialize anything he draws, bringing his paintings to life and controlling them. He has demonstrated this power by summoning giant octopuses, walls, chains, and even dragons to aid him in battle. He can perform his drawings at great speed, and his effectiveness as an artist is directly tied to his power as an ayakashi.
