Description
Ehoko Kamijo, who also goes by the nickname Epoch, is a central character introduced in the later arcs of the anime. She is a young girl who serves as the head of the influential Kamijou family. Under her box, she has distinctive blue eyes and teal hair with lilac tips, but she is almost never seen without her signature accessory.
Epoch is defined by her extreme shyness, to the point where she almost always conceals her entire body inside a large cardboard box. To communicate without revealing herself, she speaks through a megaphone attached to the box and has a unique verbal tic, often shouting pu-puku-pu. Despite her timid nature, she can be very stubborn, defiant, and quirky, especially when interacting with people in the safety of her home. Her gruff exterior is often a front, as her butler Alfred notes that her direct refusals are frequently a sign of excitement or fondness.
The primary driving force behind Epoch's character development is her reluctance to learn how to Rush Duel. When first introduced, she refuses to sign for a delivery and steals the protagonist Yudias Velgear's Deck, forcing him to play a series of absurd, non-dueling games instead. However, Yudias is appointed as her tutor by her butler, and through his persistent and earnest efforts, she gradually begins to open up. A significant turning point occurs when Yudias protects her from Zaion, a representative of a furniture store who was threatening her family. In return, when Yudias later becomes crippled by fear after using a dark power, Epoch is the one who musters her courage to help him, even revealing her bare face to an enemy to protect him. This event marks a major step in her growth from a reclusive girl to a more courageous individual.
Epoch possesses several notable abilities. She is a descendant of the Kallister family, which grants her the Pauli effect, a power that can cause technology to malfunction with a touch. More prominently, she has the Noblesse ability, which gives her voice an incredibly forceful and compelling power. As a child, she had difficulty controlling this ability, which is a major reason she sealed herself in a box and used a megaphone to speak. Once she learns Rush Dueling, she builds a Dice Deck that focuses on monsters and spells like Graceful Dice and Skull Dice. True to her quirky personality, her dueling method is unique; when activating a dice effect, she physically dresses up as a die and rolls herself to get the desired number, though this is also depicted as a form of cheating her own rolls. Her key relationships are with Yudias, who serves as her mentor and close friend, her butler Alfred, the alien entity The Lugh, and her fellow duelists Yuhi and Yuamu Ohdo.
