Description
The individual known as Prospera Mercury is the alias of Elnora Samaya, a former researcher and test pilot for the Vanadis Institute. The defining tragedy of her life is the Vanadis Incident, an attack on her research facility ordered by Delling Rembran, the president of the Benerit Group, who sought to eliminate all researchers developing GUND-ARM technology, branding them witches. During this assault, her husband, Nadim Samaya, sacrificed himself to allow her and their young daughter, Ericht, to escape. Even before this event, Elnora had lost her right arm, which was replaced with a prosthetic powered by the GUND technology she helped research.
Following the massacre, Elnora and her daughter went into hiding on the remote planet of Mercury. To conceal their identities, she adopted the name Prospera Mercury, while her daughter Ericht was renamed Suletta Mercury. As outsiders on Mercury, they faced discrimination from the local population of miners. It was during this period that Prospera became the CEO of the Shin Sei Development Corporation and, with their collaboration, created the Gundam Aerial, a powerful mobile suit that served as the successor to the Gundam Lfrith she had once piloted. The Aerial was given to her daughter Suletta, although Prospera’s work required her to travel frequently, causing her to miss much of her daughter's childhood.
Beneath her composed and charismatic exterior lies a deeply traumatized and manipulative individual driven by a thirst for revenge against Delling Rembran for the destruction of her family and the Vanadis Institute. This hatred is so great that she orchestrates an elaborate scheme to use her own daughter as a pawn. Her plan involves enrolling Suletta at the Asticassia School of Technology, where Delling’s daughter, Miorine Rembran, is a student. Prospera’s ultimate goal is to have Suletta get close to Miorine, hoping that her daughter will become engaged to and marry Miorine, thereby giving Prospera direct access to her enemy. She is a calculating strategist, often portrayed as being several steps ahead of others, and is willing to form alliances and manipulate the politics of the Benerit Group to further ends.
Her relationship with her daughters is the central, tragic contradiction of her character. She is genuinely Suletta’s mother and expresses care for her, but this affection is secondary to her all-consuming plan for revenge. She raises Suletta with a specific philosophy, teaching her that running away gives you one thing, but advancing gives you two, instilling in her a mindset necessary for the dangerous path ahead. The relationship is further complicated by the true nature of the Gundam Aerial, which houses the consciousness of her firstborn daughter, Ericht, who is often referred to as Eri. In this sense, Aerial is also her daughter, and one of her motivations is to create a world where Ericht can exist freely within the mobile suit’s data storm, a goal connected to the secret Quiet Zero project. This means Prospera is, in effect, using one daughter, Suletta, as a tool to protect and preserve the existence of her other daughter, Ericht.
As the story progresses, Prospera's health visibly deteriorates, her hair turning increasingly white due to the strain of using GUND technology and being exposed to data storms. Her meticulous manipulations eventually cause a rift with Suletta, who is forced to confront the truth of her mother's actions and her own role as a tool for revenge. In the final conflict, Prospera’s body fails her, but when Suletta refuses to continue fighting, Prospera is forced to confront the error of her ways. Ultimately, she is able to let go of her hatred and find peace, living a quiet life in the aftermath of the conflict, free from her obsessive quest for vengeance.
Notably, Prospera is a skilled mobile suit pilot, having been the test pilot for the original Gundam Lfrith. Her body is also enhanced with GUND prosthetics, which replace her right arm and allow her to directly interface with mobile suits and other technology using the Permet link. Her title of witch, originally a pejorative term for a GUND-ARM pilot, is one she reclaims in her quest to bring down the system that created it.
