Description
Mercphobia, also known as the Water Dragon God, is one of the Five Dragon Gods that inhabit the continent of Guiltina. He has existed since the Dragon King Festival, a time when he killed numerous humans, including members of the immortal Dragon Slayer Elefseria’s family. Along with the other Dragon Gods, Mercphobia fled to Guiltina to escape the wrath of Acnologia. Over time, after rescuing a shipwrecked human named Karameel, he underwent a profound change and began to support coexistence between dragons and humans. He eventually came to rule over Ermina Town, whose citizens worship him as a protective deity.

Mercphobia possesses a calm and benevolent demeanor, acting as a hospitable ruler toward visitors who earn his trust. However, he can become aggressive toward perceived enemies. He takes full responsibility for the safety of Ermina’s people and is fiercely protective of his assistant Karameel, whom he considers his reason for living. Despite his current kindness, Mercphobia openly acknowledges his past atrocities, admitting he once regarded humans as insignificant as ants. He views himself as neither good nor evil, yet he is committed to peaceful coexistence. Because his immense magical power has become uncontrollable and threatens to destroy Ermina, he grows deeply worried and even unafraid of death, going so far as to request that others kill him to prevent disaster.

In the story, Mercphobia first encounters Team Natsu when they arrive in Ermina on the 100 Years Quest. After learning their peaceful intentions, he invites them to his underwater palace and explains his predicament: his magic causes the town to flood at high tide, and he fears he will cause greater calamity. He asks the mages to kill him, but before they can act, the White Wizard Faris steals control of his power. This leads to Mercphobia being forced into a rampage, during which he battles Team Natsu. He is eventually subdued by Natsu after Natsu gains a boost from Ignia the Fire Dragon God’s flames. Following this defeat, Mercphobia’s magic power becomes obsolete, and he decides to remain in his human form as an ordinary human.

His key relationship is with Karameel, the human who inspired his change of heart. He also interacts with Elefseria, who has sent assassins against him in the past, and with the other Dragon Gods, particularly Ignia, who briefly intervenes during his rampage. Mercphobia shows a protective instinct toward the citizens of Ermina and a willingness to sacrifice himself for their safety.

Mercphobia’s notable abilities revolve around Water Dragon Slayer Magic, which allows him to control and manipulate water at an immense scale. He can summon massive waves, create water vortexes, neutralize fire magic, and dispel ice formations. As a dragon, he is enormous, even larger than the Fire Dragon Igneel, and possesses an azure sea serpent–like form with fins, tusks, and wings. In his human form, he appears as a young man with shoulder-length blue hair, two long horns, and a facial tattoo, dressed in a dark coat and pirate-style boots. His power is comparable to that of Acnologia, but his struggle to control it is a central part of his character arc.
