Description
Aryū Jūbei is a tall, eccentric forward who was initially ranked as the number two player in the Blue Lock project's Second Selection. He later takes on the role of a center-back for the Blue Lock Eleven in their match against the Japan U-20 team. Standing at 195 centimeters, he is one of the tallest players in the facility, with a lanky build characterized by very long limbs. His appearance is distinctive, featuring straight black hair that reaches his waist, dark eyes, and nails that he keeps painted black.
Aryu's personality is defined by an all-consuming obsession with aesthetics, encapsulated by his frequent use of the word osha, his own term for anything he deems stylish, beautiful, or glamorous. He is a pronounced narcissist who seeks admiration and believes in living and dying with style. His actions on and off the field are driven by the pursuit of this ideal of beauty. This obsession, however, masks a specific insecurity: he has a complex about his own name, Jūbei, which he feels is old-fashioned and unstylish, often reacting defensively when it is mentioned. Despite his vanity, he is not without respect for others; he readily admires and asks about the hair care routine of fellow player Hyōma Chigiri, acknowledging those who meet his exacting standards of glamour.
Aryu hails from Tochigi Prefecture, where his family runs an antique shop. Growing up surrounded by old objects influenced his desire for novelty and striking beauty. Before fully committing to soccer, he considered pursuing music or becoming a monk but found his true calling on the pitch, where he could best express his stylish ideals.
Aryu's primary footballing weapons are his extraordinary physical attributes. His exceptional jumping power, combined with his great height, allows him to dominate aerial duels. He can execute jumping headers and midair chest traps to receive long passes and score goals, making him a potent target in the penalty area. His most notable skill, however, is his incredible reach. Due to his long limbs, he can extend to receive passes or take shots from distances that opponents cannot match. This reach also makes him a formidable defender; during the match against the Japan U-20 team, he famously used a reverse kick to deflect a shot from Sae Itoshi away from the top corner of the goal. While originally a forward, these defensive capabilities led to him being utilized as a center-back in crucial matches.
In the story's Neo Egoist League arc, Aryu chooses to join the Italian team Ubers, drawn by the country's association with beauty and strategic play. He becomes a starter for the team, and his performance throughout the tournament increases his market value, earning a final bid of 45,000,000 yen. His career arc sees him develop from a stylish forward who secures a high initial rank to a reliable defensive starter for the Blue Lock Eleven and, subsequently, a key player in the Japan U-20 team for the U-20 World Cup.
Aryu forms key partnerships with other players, often collaborating with Rin Itoshi and Aoshi Tokimitsu during the Second Selection. He shows a strong desire to have Meguru Bachira on his team, as Bachira's creative passing maximizes his aerial strengths. He also demonstrates a notable respect for stylish rivals, and his interactions with characters like Chigiri are based on mutual recognition of aesthetic flair. Through his unwavering commitment to his unique philosophy of beauty, Aryu Jūbei establishes himself as one of Blue Lock's most memorable and distinctive personalities.
