Description
Ashgan is a legendary demon sword, a cursed blade of immense destructive power featured in the dark fantasy series The Witch and the Beast. The sword is a malevolent artifact whose true strength and monstrous physical form are kept sealed through the magic of the Velvette clan of witches. While sealed, Ashgan is immobile and can mostly only speak, yet even in this dormant state, his presence passively influences humans, causing them to desire the sword and fight over it.

The background of Ashgan reveals that he was once a far greater threat. After being sealed by the origin witch Quenna, he was kept in the care of the Velvette clan. When the clan faced near destruction, a young witch named Helga Velvette took pity on him and became his caretaker. This act of kindness created an unusual bond, as Ashgan technically had the power to corrupt the inexperienced Helga but chose not to because she was the only one who showed him sympathy. Following these events, he was eventually placed into the safekeeping of the Paladin Corps, a holy order that guards numerous cursed artifacts.

In terms of personality, Ashgan is far from a silent weapon. He possesses a distinct and snarky personality, often engaging in blunt and exasperating banter with Helga. Despite being an evil weapon of mass destruction, he has developed a genuine, if confusing, fondness for Helga. He is perplexed by the fact that he feels an emotion other than hatred for her and has expressed distaste for this vulnerability. His motivations are initially rooted in a desire to be free from his seal, but his relationship with Helga complicates this. He rejects being used by other humans and demands that Helga reclaim him when he is taken, showing a clear preference and loyalty to her.

Ashgan plays a pivotal role in the story as an object of immense power that various factions seek to control. The Paladin Corps holds him for safekeeping, but forces such as Angela’s coven attempt to breach their vaults to steal him. During a major conflict, he is forcibly released and turned into a towering, kaiju-like monster that swings its blade with enough force to carve through an entire town, a floating castle, its magical barrier, and a neighboring mountain in a single stroke. In this uncontrollable state, he becomes a threat that even witches cannot easily manage.

His key relationships are central to his character development. His bond with Helga is the most significant, as she is his morality pet and the only person he refuses to corrupt. His violent encounter with Guideau, who in an awakened state manages to defeat him, leads to a major turning point. After this defeat, Ashgan gives up on trying to free himself and accepts his fate, submitting to be transferred back to the Paladin Corps. This event helps him realize that he has grown genuinely fond of Helga, acknowledging that even a demon sword can find it within himself to care for someone.

Notable abilities make Ashgan one of the most dangerous entities in his world. When his seal is broken, he transforms into a colossal eldritch abomination. His power is so great that a simple glance from his released form can generate shockwaves that slice through nearly any defense. He is considered a weapon of mass destruction, literally capable of carving planets to pieces. One of the methods to unseal him involves using the blade to stab the heart of a witch, followed by countless human sacrifices to fuel his hunger for destruction. Furthermore, the sword prefers living victims, a characteristic that complicates battles against him. His very existence is treated as an unholy nuke by both witches and the Paladin Corps, a sealed evil that must never be fully unleashed.
