Description
Mithrun, often referred to as Captain Mithrun, is an elven captain of the Canaries, a specialized squad sent to assess and neutralize dangerous dungeons. He is an elf with short gray hair, black eyes, and a prosthetic right eye, with the tips of his ears cut off as a mark of his past. Born as the illegitimate child of the noble House Kerensil, he grew up feeling shame about his origins and hid his insecurity behind arrogance, straining his relationship with his legitimate brother. This drove him to seek mastery and achievement, leading him to become a Dungeon Lord in the city of Utaya roughly forty years before the main story. In that role, he made a pact with a demon known as the Winged Lion, which eventually consumed nearly all of his desires, leaving only a single driving emotion: revenge against the demon. The demon also physically damaged him, costing him an eye and impairing his hearing. After this catastrophic event, Mithrun was found and saved by Milsiril, a former Canary, and underwent roughly twenty years of rehabilitation before rejoining the Canaries as their captain.
Personality wise, Mithrun is calm and collected at all times, but his lost desires have left him hollow in many respects. He forgets to eat or sleep, has no sense of direction outside of dungeons, speaks with brutal honesty without social filters, and shows almost no concern for his own survival. He is very blunt and direct, making him seem distant or detached. His sole motivation is his hatred for demons, particularly the one that stripped him of his wants, and he pursues this goal with single-minded focus.
In the story, Mithrun serves as the leader of the Canaries, an elven unit sent to the Island to deal with the dungeon there. His role places him in opposition to the protagonists at times, but he ultimately becomes a reluctant ally. His most notable relationship is with Kabru, who acts as his handler, managing everyday tasks like navigating social interactions. Their dynamic contrasts Kabru's perceptive and strategic nature with Mithrun's stripped-down directness. Mithrun also has a complicated past with his brother, who helped him during his recovery, and with Milsiril, who aided his rehabilitation.
Character development is subtle but significant. Initially driven only by revenge, small moments throughout the story hint that other desires might slowly begin to return, suggesting a possibility of regaining some semblance of normal life. His backstory is gradually revealed through the accounts of other characters, particularly Kabru.
Mithrun's notable abilities center on spatial magic, specifically a form of teleportation he uses offensively. Instead of teleporting himself, he can exchange the positions of two objects in space. In combat, this allows him to swap chunks of stone or debris directly into an enemy's body, replace air with solid matter to trap foes, or instantly reposition objects to disorient opponents. He also has an instinctive understanding of dungeon layouts. However, his physical strength is limited compared to trained elven soldiers, and his lack of self-preservation instincts makes him vulnerable in prolonged fights. Despite these limitations, his magic makes him one of the deadliest fighters in the series.
