TV-Series
Description
Aoi Kaguragi is a supporting character in the Kaiju No. 8 series, known for his serious demeanor, physical prowess, and quiet but strong sense of duty. Before joining the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, he was a rising star in the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, where he was considered a highly promising talent with a secure future in the military hierarchy. Despite his expected path to promotion, he made the conscious decision to leave that career behind and apply to the Defense Force, prioritizing direct action against the kaiju threat over a traditional military career.

In terms of personality, Aoi is a young man of few words, presenting a consistently calm, collected, and serious exterior. He is often described as stoic and hard to read, keeping his deeper emotions hidden beneath a composed surface. This reserved nature does not mean he is detached; rather, he is deeply realistic and possesses a strong sense of responsibility towards his comrades. He values teamwork and has a grounded understanding of the dangers inherent in his profession. On one occasion during a team gathering, he expressed his sincere wish that no one in his unit would be lost, revealing his underlying care for the people he fights alongside. He is also driven by a proud and competitive spirit, constantly striving to improve himself and surpass his peers.

Aoi's primary motivation is to grow stronger and become a reliable asset to the Defense Force. He is not one to speak at length about his reasons, but his actions consistently demonstrate a commitment to self-improvement and to supporting his team in the field. His decision to transfer divisions later in the story is explicitly motivated by a desire to continue developing his abilities.

Within the story, Aoi quickly distinguishes himself among the new recruits. He achieved the highest score in the fitness portion of the Defense Force entrance exam and demonstrated an initial unleashed combat power of 15% from his Defense Force suit. Through training, he progressed to unlock 25% of his suit's power, a significant increase that shows his potential for growth. He was initially assigned to the Third Division and participated in key events, including the Sagamihara Neutralization Operation and the raid on Tachikawa Base. During the raid, he fought Wyvern-type kaiju under the instruction of Kafka Hibino before witnessing Kafka's transformation into Kaiju No. 8. Following the near-destruction of Tachikawa Base, Aoi, seeking to become stronger, transferred to the Second Division alongside fellow trainee Haruichi Izumo. He later returned to the Third Division to help counter a major kaiju wave.

Aoi's key relationships are defined by rivalry and respect. His most notable connection is with Haruichi Izumo, a fellow trainee of comparable talent. The two share a healthy and constant rivalry, constantly measuring themselves against each other in both training and combat. This competition, however, is underpinned by a deep mutual respect, and they are frequently shown working together effectively as a formidable team on the battlefield. He also shares a strong admiration for Captain Mina Ashiro, and on rare occasions, allows his typically hidden emotions to show when the subject of his respect for her comes up. He is perceived by his peers as a trustworthy and loyal comrade, as shown when he texted Kafka Hibino to check on him after a major incident.

Aoi's development throughout the series is measured by his steady increase in combat capability and his adaptability as a soldier. He begins as an elite recruit, already skilled from his time in the Ground Self-Defense Force, and quickly proves his worth in live combat. His progression from 15% to 25% unleashed combat power in a short time highlights his accelerated growth. He later acquires a specialized weapon, the PB-3115 pile driver, further enhancing his combat options. His willingness to transfer divisions to continue growing demonstrates a mature approach to his own development as an officer.

Notable abilities include his exceptional physical strength, which allowed him to place first in the fitness exam. He is a highly skilled martial artist, with Soshiro Hoshina, the Third Division's vice-captain and a sword specialist, complimenting his kendo skills and acknowledging his remarkable talent. Aoi is proficient with standard Defense Force firearms and can load various kaiju-enhanced rounds that have elemental properties such as explosive, ice, and electricity. His tactical ability is described as top-notch, and he possesses sharp analytical skills that allow him to predict enemy attacks. As a former member of the JGSDF, he is also trained in Jieitaikakutōjutsu, the Japanese self-defense forces' system of hand-to-hand combat and bayonet techniques.
