Description
Keitaro Gentoga is the main protagonist of the supernatural horror series Dark Gathering. He is a young university student who possesses a powerful spiritual constitution, which unfortunately makes him a natural magnet for ghosts and other malevolent entities. This ability is a double-edged sword; while it allows him to sense the presence of spirits, it also draws them directly to him, a trait that becomes central to his role in the story.
Before the events of the series, Keitaro had a deeply traumatic experience in middle school when a spiritual encounter led to both him and his childhood friend being cursed. The curse manifested physically, causing nerve endings to grow on their hands, and the psychological fallout caused Keitaro to become a complete shut-in for over two years. His return to society is a slow and careful process, largely thanks to the unwavering support of his childhood friend, Eiko Hozuki. As part of his rehabilitation, he takes a part-time job as a private tutor, a decision that sets the entire plot in motion when he discovers his first student is Eiko's younger cousin, Yayoi Hozuki.
In terms of personality, Keitaro is initially defined by his fear and anxiety. He is a cowardly young man who strongly prefers to keep his life far away from anything involving the paranormal, often panicking in dangerous situations or when confronted by the reckless actions of those around him. This fear, however, does not make him selfish. On the contrary, he is intensely caring and deeply values the people close to him. His primary motivation throughout the story is twofold: to find a way to lift the curse that afflicts him and Eiko, and to protect those he cares about, even if it means confronting the very spirits that terrify him. While his initial goal is to simply become a functional member of society again, his encounter with Yayoi gives him a concrete objective, shifting his motivation from passive rehabilitation to an active search for a cure.
Keitaro’s role in the story is that of an unwilling but crucial participant. Yayoi, despite her own powerful spiritual abilities, finds that spirits tend to avoid her. Keitaro’s nature as a spirit magnet makes him the perfect bait to lure dangerous ghosts out of hiding so that Yayoi can capture them. Their partnership is built on mutual benefit: Yayoi needs him to draw out the spirits she hunts to find her missing mother, and Keitaro agrees to help her in the hopes of learning how to undo his curse. He serves as the audience’s grounded perspective, reacting with understandable horror to the terrifying situations that Yayoi approaches with unnerving composure.
His key relationships define his journey. His bond with Eiko Hozuki is the most significant. She is not only his childhood friend but also his girlfriend and primary emotional support system. While she is sweet and caring, she also displays obsessive and yandere tendencies, such as tracking his location, which adds a complex layer to their dynamic. His relationship with Yayoi Hozuki is the story’s engine. He is her tutor, but their dynamic quickly evolves into that of an uneasy partner in her dangerous hobby, as he is both terrified of her and reliant on her expertise to achieve his own goals. His grandmother, a shrine priestess, also plays a vital role, as she is currently using her abilities to suppress the curse on his right hand.
Over the course of the narrative, Keitaro shows signs of significant development. While initially a somewhat passive character, he begins to set his own goals and actively work through his trauma rather than just running from it. He makes a conscious decision to face his fears head-on, transforming from a shut-in paralyzed by his past into a person who, despite his cowardice, chooses to step into danger for the sake of others. This development is gradual, but it marks a clear shift from being a helpless victim of his circumstances to an active agent in his own right.
Despite his lack of combat training, Keitaro possesses notable abilities that are essential to the group. His primary ability is spiritual awareness and attraction, which acts as a beacon for the dead. Furthermore, due to sharing the same curse as Eiko, he has established a unique spiritual link with her, allowing them to connect and assist each other even when separated between the world of the living and the realm of the dead. His courage, born from care for his loved ones, becomes his greatest asset in a world filled with dark entities.
