Description
In the anime Dark Gathering, the entity referred to as God is an antagonistic figure of immense power whose true identity is the Taoist deity Taeseonggun, also known as the Grand Duke of Jupiter. Initially introduced as a harmless-looking white-haired boy spirit attached to a young girl named Ai Kamiyo, this God is quickly captured by the protagonist Yayoi Hozuki. In this subdued state, the spirit appears kind, even asking Yayoi to protect Ai through a dream.

This deceptive appearance is shattered when his true nature is revealed. He is, in fact, a cruel and ancient evil god with a horrific modus operandi: he claims the soul of a girl he favors on her twentieth birthday. His personality is depicted as terrible, marked by a profound sadism and a deep-seated trauma that drives his actions. He consumes the souls of the women he captures, leaving only their heads, and uses the souls of their lower bodies as macabre decorations. His very presence emits such potent energy that it attracts all manner of malevolent spirits, and the reverberations of his power are devastatingly destructive.

God's central motivation stems from a state of immense suffering. He is driven by an instinct to survive while having lost his memories, his face, and all recollection of important people from his past, a condition that fuels his cruelty. He takes pleasure in tormenting others, deliberately instilling fear in those who have already given up on life. This is particularly evident in his relationship with Ai Kamiyo. While he possesses her and uses her as a vessel, he also shows a twisted form of care, ensuring she is unharmed during a train accident caused by a clash with another powerful spirit. He grants Ai a final conversation before his decisive battle with Yayoi, indicating a complex, possessive attachment to her.

As the story progresses, his role evolves from a mysterious, nearly invincible threat to the primary objective of Yayoi's grand plan. Yayoi recognizes that to defeat him, she must first gather a team of five exceptionally powerful graduate-level spirits. God views this entire conflict as a game. He is condescending and mocking, taunting his opponents and enjoying the challenge they present. He deliberately withholds his full power, fighting in a divided form, because he is entertained by the potential he sees in his enemies and wants them to become stronger to amuse him further. This playful yet sadistic demeanor highlights his overwhelming confidence in his own superiority.

The key relationship in the narrative is his adversarial dynamic with Yayoi Hozuki. Yayoi is a young exorcist who is uniquely fearless and strategic, provoking him and declaring war to prepare a "slave place for God". In response, God eagerly accepts the challenge, signaling the start of their final confrontation. His other significant relationships include his status as a "legacy of wealth" passed down through Ai's family, a blessing that instead led to a path of resentment. He is also known to other powerful beings in the world, such as the group "Those Who Changed," who consider him too dangerous to engage.

God's development is primarily defined by the gradual revelation of his true identity and the source of his power. He is not just any spirit but the incarnation of the fictional planet Taese, positioned opposite Jupiter in ancient Chinese astrology. In this belief system, he is considered the emperor of earth and the leader of evil gods, a deity of vastly higher rank than figures like Marbas. He is deeply connected to Onmyodo, having been worshiped as the head of the Hachiyojin, overseeing the fortune of directions. His notable abilities are a reflection of his divine nature. He can easily escape powerful seals and curses, as shown when he burst all of Yayoi's sealed dolls with a mere flex of power. He commands twelve shikigami that represent the cardinal directions, uses location-based attacks, and has a means of recovery through a mass of corpses. During his final battle, he summons the Twelve Heavenly Gods and, even while heavily cursed, he fights with excitement, using his shikigami to restore himself and wielding a weapon called the Gyokukankyu.
