Description
Peeps, known as Pii-chan in the original Japanese version, is one of the main characters of the anime Sasaki and Peeps. On the surface he appears to be a small Java sparrow, with grey feathers, white cheeks, a pink beak, bright star-shaped eyes, and a distinctive white star-shaped marking on his chest. This adorable appearance hides his true identity, as he is actually the reincarnation of Piercarlo, a famous sage from another world known as the Star Sage. In his previous life he was a highly respected and powerful magician who was ambushed and killed by corrupt nobles, only to find himself reborn as a small bird in modern Japan. Sasaki, a middle-aged office worker, buys him from a pet shop, and after the bird suddenly begins speaking human language and reveals his past, Sasaki gives him the name Peeps. The two then form a pact to live and work together, connecting their magical energy so that Sasaki gains the ability to use magic and travel between worlds.
In terms of personality, Peeps is proud and dignified, carrying himself with the composure of a great sage despite his tiny form. He is highly intelligent, quick to act, and decisive, capable of assessing situations rapidly and willing to employ tough methods when the situation calls for them. His thinking is rational and calm rather than emotional, and he tends to view situations from a broad perspective, giving advice based on his extensive knowledge and experience while prioritizing what is practical and safe. Toward people he finds irritating he can seem cold, strict, or blunt, but he is fundamentally loyal and caring toward those he accepts as his own. He still thinks of himself by his original name, Piercarlo, but is comfortable using the name Peeps when it is more convenient.
Peeps’s primary motivation is to live a comfortable and easy life. After being reincarnated, he decides to spend his new existence the way he wishes rather than pursuing the grand responsibilities of his past, and he shares Sasaki’s goal of achieving a relaxed and enjoyable lifestyle. This desire shapes much of the pair’s activity, including their trading ventures between the modern world and the parallel world, where Sasaki brings products from Japan to sell in the other world to earn money and enjoy a slower pace of life.
Within the story, Peeps is the catalyst for everything that happens to Sasaki. He bestows Sasaki with magical power, grants him the ability to cross between worlds, and then acts as his teacher and guide while Sasaki learns to use his abilities. He also serves as an explainer of the other world’s rules, culture, and magic, providing the knowledge that allows Sasaki to navigate unfamiliar situations. Although Peeps rarely takes direct action in modern-world affairs, his wisdom and magical strength make him a formidable presence when he does intervene, and his counsel repeatedly helps Sasaki through the increasingly dangerous conflicts involving psychics, magical girls, and political struggles in the parallel world.
His most important relationship is with Sasaki, with whom he forms a close partnership built on mutual trust. Peeps supplies knowledge, judgment, and magical backing, while Sasaki handles much of the practical work of their daily lives, and the two complement each other effectively. Peeps is also connected to the other world through his past as the Star Sage, giving him familiarity with figures such as the merchant Marc and the politics of the kingdom Sasaki becomes involved with. With most others, including the people Sasaki meets in modern Japan, Peeps tends to keep a certain distance, preferring to assist indirectly through advice rather than inserting himself into their affairs.
Over the course of the story, Peeps develops from a reincarnated sage keeping his identity secret into a genuine companion who has accepted his new life alongside Sasaki. He remains proud and learned, but he grows more comfortable with his role as a partner rather than simply a master or mentor, adapting his vast knowledge to the everyday problems of a life shared between two worlds. His notable abilities include mastery of magic from the other world, the power to speak and reason like a human despite being a bird, the capacity to grant magical powers to others through a magical connection, and deep expertise in the other world’s magic, society, and politics, all of which make him an invaluable ally despite his small appearance.
