Description
Kanata Asakawa is a central character in the racing anime Highspeed Étoile, serving as a fellow rookie competitor and close friend to the protagonist, Rin Rindou. As a student at the same racing school as Rin and her other friend Towa Komachi, Kanata is part of a trio of newcomers who enter the world of professional NEX Racing together. Unlike her more introverted friends, Kanata is characterized by her passionate and enthusiastic nature. She is someone who acts quickly on her impulses, bringing a burst of energy to her team. However, this spirited exterior also comes with a hidden vulnerability, as she is known to become fragile or lose her composure when things do not go according to plan. Her personality also serves a key social function, as she is the one who often encourages her indoor-preferring friends, Rin and Towa, to go outside and engage with the world around them.

Within the narrative, Kanata competes for the Izanami Racing team, making her a direct rival on the track to Rin, who drives for V-ZEN Racing. Despite being competitors, the three rookies share a strong and friendly bond, often appearing together and pushing each other to improve. Their collective ambition is a recurring theme, with all three dreaming of one day standing together on the podium to claim the top spots in a race. Kanata’s role is that of a supportive but determined peer. In early races, she and Towa are shown to be more friendly toward Rin than antagonistic, and they share in the shared frustration of seasoned champions like Richard Parker, realizing that overcoming such veterans is a necessary step to challenging the top racers, the King and Queen. Her presence helps to illustrate the journey of the new generation of racers as a group effort, even as they fight for individual glory.

Kanata’s abilities as a driver are portrayed as competent and formidable, placing her among the elite new talents of the NEX Race. She is involved in key race events that demonstrate both her skill and the perils of the sport. During a race at the challenging Monaco circuit, known for its sharp turns, Kanata is one of the drivers who crashes, leading to her elimination from the event. This moment underscores the high-risk nature of their profession. Later, she shows significant growth and determination. In a subsequent season at the Bai Yu Lan circuit in Shanghai, Kanata successfully overtakes the skilled veteran Richard Parker, a significant feat that speaks to her developing racecraft. She then catches up to the top competitor, Alice Summerwood the Queen, before ultimately spinning out, allowing another rival, Liu Youran, to seize the lead and win. This sequence of events highlights her aggressive driving style and capacity to challenge the best, while also showing that she still struggles with consistency and control at the highest level.

Kanata’s development throughout the series is tied to her experiences on the track and her relationships within the rookie trio. The three friends are shown training together, learning about the driving styles of established champions, and resolving to find their own unique ways of racing rather than simply imitating others. Her passion is a driving force, but her moments of vulnerability—such as the fragility mentioned in her core personality or the disappointment of crashes—provide a clear arc of growth as she learns to handle the immense pressures of professional racing. Her notable ability is her raw speed and willingness to be aggressive, which allows her to make daring overtakes like the one on Richard Parker. However, her character also represents the fine line between pushing for victory and succumbing to a mistake, making her a dynamic and unpredictable presence in every race she enters.
