Description
Faeria is a character from the fictional game Faeria Chronicle Online, which serves as the catalyst for the story in Shangri-La Frontier. She is the princess character that the protagonist, Rakuro Hizutome, must protect throughout the notoriously poorly designed role-playing game. As a non-playable character, Faeria has the visual appearance of a young adult elf woman, characterized by her blue eyes and long blonde hair, which she often wears in a braid, along with a dress. Her defining trait within the narrative of Faeria Chronicle Online is her intentionally frustrating and detrimental behavior. Rather than serving as a helpful ally, she is coded as a hindrance, frequently causing problems for the player's journey. She is directly blamed for the deaths of villagers and party members due to her incompetence, exemplified by an incident where she drives a carriage into a villager and then falsely blames the dark lord for the accident. Furthermore, her programming includes mechanics that can stall game progress, such as refusing to move for hours if the player does not cater to her whims.

Faeria's primary role in the wider story of Shangri-La Frontier is to act as the final obstacle for the "trash-game hunter" Rakuro Hizutome. After a long and arduous journey, the player defeats the dark lord, prompting Faeria to express gratitude. However, the game allows for a unique three-minute window after the final boss is defeated and before the credits roll, during which the player can attack Faeria without any in-game consequences. The protagonist seizes this opportunity to kick her, stating she is a menace who should go to hell alongside the dark lord, as an act of revenge for the suffering she caused throughout the game. Completing this game and dealing with Faeria leads to a feeling of burnout for the protagonist, which directly motivates him to seek a new game and eventually start playing Shangri-La Frontier.

Her key relationship, therefore, is not with characters within her own game world but with the player, Sunraku. He holds an intense, in-universe animosity towards her, considering her the single worst element of what he already deems a terrible game. She exists as a parody of the frustrating "escort mission" or poorly-designed companion character found in many video games. Within the context of Shangri-La Frontier, Faeria is an antagonistic memory; her character design is a benchmark for poor game design and serves as a point of contrast to the more refined world that the protagonist subsequently enters. Her development is nonexistent within her own game, as her purpose is to be a static, unchanging source of frustration. Her significance is fully realized in her absence, as the relief of escaping her influence shapes the protagonist's initial approach to a new, well-crafted game. The only notable ability attributed to her is not a combat skill but the passive, meta-game ability to frustrate players and derail game progression through her poorly designed artificial intelligence and scripted events.
