Description
Dot Barrett is a first-year student at Easton Magic Academy, easily recognized by his spiky red hair and the black headband he wears across his forehead. He stands 178 centimeters or about five feet ten inches tall, and his birthday is April first. On his face, a single zigzag magic line sits beneath his left eye. While his loud and boisterous appearance defines his everyday look, he uses his headband to conceal a warding cross on his forehead known as the Ira Kreuz, a mark tied to his hidden lineage as a Self-Restraint One or battle demon.

Dot has a personality that is as explosive as his magic. He is hot-blooded, obnoxious, and loudly proclaims himself to be the protagonist of the world, believing everything revolves around him. Despite this self-centered and brash exterior, he possesses a surprising degree of honesty and a tendency to rush into situations, even when foolish. Deep down, he is a kind and loyal friend who is willing to apologize when he is wrong. One of his most defining and comedic traits is his intense jealousy of handsome or popular men, whom he blames for his own lack of romantic success. His ultimate goal in becoming a Divine Visionary is to create a world without these good-looking rivals. However, this rough demeanor contrasts sharply with some unexpectedly gentle habits; he is fond of herbal tea, is quite skilled at brewing it, and often brings it as a gift, leading his friend Finn Ames to speculate he comes from a good family. He also has a straightforward and honest way of dealing with challenges, even when it puts him at a disadvantage.

Dot's background explains much of his current behavior. As a child, he was timid and often bullied, but he was constantly protected by his older sister. This experience had a profound effect on his sense of friendship, as his sister taught him never to betray a true friend who would cry or get angry for his sake. He comes from a family consisting of his grandmother, mother, and that older sister, which is also the origin of his surprisingly well-mannered side.

In the story, Dot is introduced as a rival to the main character, Mash Burnedead, though his hostility is largely one-sided and born from jealousy. During a forest class hunting scorpions, his hot-headed nature leads him into a trap set by the Lang dormitory student Silva Iron, and he is badly injured after falling for a provocation. When Mash saves him, Dot begins his journey from a self-proclaimed rival to a genuine, if still troublesome, friend. He later develops a strong, unrequited affection for their classmate Lemon Irvine after she shows concern for his injuries, leading to several public confessions that are promptly rejected each time.

Key relationships define his role in the group. He sees Lance Crown as a rival due to Lance’s good looks and popularity, though he internally knows Lance is stronger. Despite his envy, he fights alongside Lance and others against common enemies. His friendship with Mash is central; he once disliked Mash but grew to respect him deeply, and he cannot stand by when someone belittles his friend. In a later battle against the magician Epidem, seeing Lance Crown seriously hurt triggers a powerful emotional response and a significant power-up for Dot.

Throughout the series, Dot undergoes notable development. His arc moves from a boy who was always protected to one who fiercely protects his friends. Remembering his sister’s advice during a fight with Love Cute of Magia Lupus, he unlocks his hidden power to stand up for Mash, marking a turning point in his character. His courage and loyalty are further tested in the battle against the Walkis mages, where he continues to fight even when completely sapped of magic, refusing to let his enemies insult Mash. This fight demonstrates his iron will and proves that his determination makes him a true main character in spirit, even if he lacks the raw power of someone like Mash.

Dot's notable abilities center on his explosion-based magic. His primary spell is Explom, which allows him to fire a fireball that detonates on impact. He can upgrade this to Machine Gun Explom, firing a rapid series of explosive shots. Dot is a Self-Restraint One, meaning he belongs to a special lineage of battle mages who release a tremendous amount of magical power when their emotions peak. This power is connected to the Ira Kreuz, a cross-shaped mark on his forehead that he normally hides. When this mark activates, he can easily overpower even two-line magicians. In a moment of intense emotion after a friend is hurt, he awakens his power further, manifesting two giant cross-shaped cannon barrels on his arms that fire devastating, rapid explosions, overwhelming his enemies.
