Description
Arios Orlando is a descendant of the First Hero and initially holds the title of Hero, acting as the leader of the party assembled to defeat the Demon Lord. However, he starkly contrasts with his noble ancestor, as he is portrayed as an arrogant, delusional, and deeply selfish individual. His pride is immense, leading him to view others, particularly Beast Tamers, as mere tools to be used for his benefit. While he can present a friendly face to nobles and those in positions of authority, he holds a genuine contempt for common people, which results in a poor reputation among the general populace of the cities he visits.
The core of Arios's character is defined by his jealousy and hatred toward Rein Shroud, the protagonist. Despite Rein's crucial support role, Arios considers him useless due to his lack of direct physical or magical prowess. Driven by this prejudice and a desire to assert his own superiority, Arios banishes Rein from the Hero's Party. This decision proves catastrophic, as the party soon finds itself unable to progress, failing to navigate the Forest of Confusion without Rein's guidance and suffering defeats against the Demon Lord's army. Instead of acknowledging his mistake, Arios's response is to seek out Rein to manipulate him into returning, all while secretly planning to discard him again.
Arios's personality is marked by an extreme refusal to accept responsibility. After his initial defeat by Rein, who has grown significantly stronger by forming contracts with members of the ultimate species, Arios does not learn humility but instead descends further into obsessive rage and a desire for revenge. He is a coward at heart, begging for mercy when defeated, but his hatred quickly overwhelms any fear. This vendetta leads him to commit heinous acts, including betraying humanity, allying with corrupt individuals, and orchestrating the murder of members of the Adventurer's Guild in a failed plot to frame Rein. His xenophobia is also a notable trait; he views demi-humans from the strongest races with contempt, dismissively calling them Rein's pets, a fatal miscalculation of their true power.
Throughout the story, Arios's role is that of a primary antagonist whose actions directly oppose the protagonist. He begins as a colleague and leader but quickly becomes an enemy. His relationships are consistently transactional and toxic. He never views his fellow party members, Aggath, Leanne, and Mina, as friends or equals, instead seeing them as disposable pawns. His obsession is laser-focused on Rein Shroud, whom he considers his archnemesis, blaming him for the downfall of his reputation and career. Ultimately, his betrayal leads to him being stripped of his title, arrested, and imprisoned by the kingdom.
Arios undergoes a clear descent into villainy and madness. He was not always a tyrant; before becoming the Hero, he was described as a kind and heroic individual. However, the worship and adulation he received upon gaining the Hero title corrupted him, turning him into a spoiled and arrogant brat who refused to bow to anyone. After his defeats and public humiliation, he completely abandons any pretense of heroism. He escapes prison with the help of a demon subordinate, willingly joins the Demon Lord's army, and allows himself to be mutated into a demon, fully embracing his monstrous nature. In his final state, he becomes a complete deranged lunatic, so lost in his delusions that he cannot see his own wrongdoing, even as he faces execution. His former comrades eventually abandon him, and he meets his end killed by Rein Shroud.
In terms of abilities, Arios possesses a power known as Limit Break, though his mastery over it is incomplete, and his overall skill level is only that of a particularly excellent adventurer, not the transcendent warrior a Hero should be. His primary offensive magic is lightning-based. He is capable of using a spell called Giga Bolt, which unleashes a powerful electric discharge. Notably, this spell is described as something only a human Hero can use. He is also mentioned to have another spell, Lunatic Bolt, though the specific details of its effects are not documented. Despite his title and lineage, his abilities are ultimately insufficient to match the strengthened Rein and his companions, leading to his repeated and decisive defeats.
