TV-Series
Description
Arnes is a high-ranking demon who serves as a devoted follower of Wolbach, the Goddess of Sloth and Violence, in the spin-off story. She has the appearance of a beautiful and voluptuous woman in her twenties, with cat-like yellow eyes and free-flowing waist-length red hair. Her demonic features include goat-like horns sprouting from the sides of her head, bat-like wings protruding from her back, pointed ears, and an arrow-tip shaped tail. Her usual attire is very revealing, similar to that of a succubus, consisting of a gold choker, a bikini top, sleeved gloves, underwear, and knee-high boots. When traveling incognito among humans, she wears a short cloak with a hood adorned with fake animal ears to conceal her more inhuman features.
Arnes is characterized by her genuine loyalty and caring nature towards her master, Wolbach, to whom she is completely devoted. Although she can be disdainful and short-tempered, she is also well-mannered and never starts a fight. According to Megumin, Arnes is the type who is tough on the outside but soft on the inside. As a demon, she is surprisingly reasonable and keeps her promises, never trying to deceive or coerce others. However, she seems to be very unlucky, often being made a scapegoat for someone else's crimes or forced to retreat in tears while being chased by an angry mob despite doing nothing wrong.
In the anime adaptation, Arnes's personality takes a darker turn due to past trauma. She becomes resentful and distrustful of humanity after suffering lies and betrayals, particularly after buying a cursed magical item crafted by Megumin's father. This experience leaves her so traumatized that the word promise alone is enough to trigger her. Upon discovering that Megumin is the daughter of the man who made that cursed item, her hatred grows to the point that she vows to destroy even Megumin's soul.
Arnes's primary motivation throughout the story is to locate and reunite with her master, Wolbach. After Wolbach's seal is broken near the Crimson Demon Village, Arnes realizes that Chomusuke, Megumin's beloved cat, is actually the true form of her master. She then attempts to negotiate with Megumin to surrender Chomusuke, offering a significant amount of money in exchange. Her actions are all driven by this deep-seated loyalty, and she becomes emotional when discussing anything involving her master.
In the story, Arnes serves as an antagonist who comes into conflict with Megumin. She first appears in the Crimson Demon Village, where she explains the situation to Megumin and tries to buy Chomusuke. Although Megumin agrees to the deal, the intervention of the village people leads to complications, and Arnes ends up being falsely accused of the explosion crimes that Megumin herself had committed. She is chased away without her master or her money. Later, Arnes follows Megumin to the town of Arcanletia, where she attempts to take Chomusuke by force but is stopped by the priest Zesta. In her final confrontation, she attacks the wagon carrying Megumin and her companions, taking hostages and forcing Yunyun into a weakened state. She prepares a powerful cursed lightning spell to kill Megumin, but is ultimately defeated by Megumin's explosion magic and sent back to Hell.
Arnes shares significant relationships with a few key characters. Her bond with Wolbach is the most important, as her entire existence revolves around serving and protecting her master. Her relationship with Megumin is antagonistic, defined by her repeated failed attempts to retrieve Chomusuke, which eventually escalates into genuine hatred in the anime version. She also has a fellow servant named Host, who shares her devotion to Wolbach.
As a high-ranked demon, Arnes possesses considerable power. She is an immortal creature from Hell that feeds on negative emotions to survive. According to Megumin, defeating her would require the combined effort of several arch-wizards using advanced magic. She is strong enough to defeat around twenty adventurers simultaneously with her bare fists. However, as a demon, she is vulnerable to holy magic used by priests. Her abilities include flight using her wings, and the power to project her demonic aura to herd minor monsters. She is also a powerful mage with a large amount of mana, capable of using intermediate-level spells like Fireball and Lightning with extraordinary power. Furthermore, she can use advanced magic, including Cursed Lightning, which creates a massive sphere of black lightning capable of engulfing a large field.
