Description
Archiprêtre Zesta is the highest-ranking leader of the Axis Order, the eccentric religious sect that worships the goddess Aqua. He directly oversees the order's main chapter in the holy city of Arcanletia, a town famous for its hot springs and the fanatical devotion of its inhabitants. In terms of background, very little is revealed about his life before he assumed his position as the supreme pontiff, but his current role defines his entire existence.

Physically, Zesta is a middle-aged man with dark grey hair, a full mustache and beard, and green eyes. His attire is the standard, albeit high-quality, uniform of his station: a deep blue robe that covers his entire body, complemented by a large, ceremonial miter. His appearance is that of a traditional, high-ranking clergyman, a look that belies his unorthodox personality.

Zesta's personality perfectly encapsulates the chaotic and shameless nature of the Axis Order. On the surface, he is a lecherous, perverted, and utterly irresponsible individual. He frequently abandons his clerical duties to loiter in town, has no qualms about publicly harassing women, and is known for devising outlandish and often flawed scams to recruit new members for his sect. His perversions are remarkably broad, as he has expressed interest in not just human women but also humanoid monsters like orcs, harpies, and lamias, provided they are attractive. However, when faced with a genuine threat, particularly from demons or the undead, Zesta drops his frivolous demeanor completely and becomes a serious and formidable holy warrior. He has no tolerance for monsters, regardless of their appearance, and will destroy them without hesitation. Despite his many flaws, he possesses keen observational skills and sharp insight. He was one of the very few individuals able to deduce the true divine identity of Aqua simply by witnessing the sheer power of her magic. He is also cunning enough to manipulate a lie-detecting bell during an interrogation, turning the tables on his accuser and traumatizing them in the process.

Zesta's motivations are a mix of self-serving pleasure and genuine devotion to his goddess. He is driven by his base desires for leisure and women, often scheming to fulfill his own wants. Yet, this is balanced by a sincere, if warped, dedication to Aqua and the Axis Order. His primary goal as a religious leader is to spread the faith, usually through aggressive and deceptive recruitment tactics that he is eager to learn and improve. He is fiercely antagonistic towards the rival Eris Church, blaming its followers for his own order's poor conversion rates. His loyalty to Aqua is absolute; upon learning that she had manifested in the world, he immediately took steps to covertly support her.

In the story of the spin-off focusing on Megumin, Zesta plays a significant supporting role. He meets the young Crimson Demon when she is brought to his cathedral by his subordinate, Cecily. Initially, his interactions with Megumin are dominated by his perverted nature, as he attempts to coerce her into calling him intimate names or bathing with him. Despite this, he agrees to help her find a mage who uses Explosion magic and pays for her travel to Axel as thanks for her conversion ideas, revealing a strange kind of generosity. He is also the central figure in a major incident where he accidentally contaminates Arcanletia's hot springs with slime powder, leading to his own arrest and subsequent release after proving his innocence with a lie-detecting device. Later, he leads the Axis Order in a fierce and fanatical hunt against the demon Arnes, who was responsible for the city's anomalies.

His key relationships are defined by his position and personality. He works closely with Cecily, a fellow priest of the Axis Order, though even she is often bewildered by the extreme lengths of his shamelessness. His relationship with Megumin is transactional yet amicable; he is an ally who provides her with aid, but one she must constantly fend off due to his inappropriate advances. His rivalry with the Eris Church is a major driving force behind his actions as a religious leader. Most importantly, his relationship with his own goddess, Aqua, is one of profound, unwavering reverence. He is her oracle, capable of hearing her divine pleas for money, and he treats her with the utmost seriousness and respect.

While Zesta does not undergo a dramatic personal transformation, his role highlights the duality of the Axis Order's followers. He begins as a seemingly one-note comedic pervert but is quickly shown to be a highly capable and insightful leader when the situation demands it. His ability to switch between being a laughing nuisance and a terrifyingly effective archpriest is a recurring theme. His recognition of Aqua's true nature, while others dismiss her, further cements his position as more than just a fool.

As the supreme pontiff, Zesta is an exceptionally powerful archpriest. He claims, with apparent justification, to have the highest level among all of the Axis Cult's clergy. His power is so great that Kazuma once noted that with Zesta's support spells, an ordinary person could defeat an ogre with their bare hands. His holy magic repertoire is extensive and potent. For direct offense and purification, he can use Sacred Highness Exorcism, which summons a devastating pillar of holy light to drive away demons, and Turn Undead, which can annihilate multiple skeleton warriors in a single blast. For defense, he possesses Reflect, a spell that creates a magical barrier to send an opponent's projectiles back at them. He is also a master of support magic, able to cast Blessing to increase luck, Protection to raise physical defense, and Powered to enhance physical strength. Furthermore, his utility is unmatched, as he can use Heal for instant recovery and Sacred Break Spell, a powerful incantation capable of dispelling even advanced-level magic like Light of Saber. His competence as a high-ranking cleric is never in doubt, making his ridiculous personal conduct all the more striking.
