Description
Atal, also known as Ataru, is a character from the anime and manga series KamiKatsu: Working for God in a Godless World. She serves as one of the primary antagonists before undergoing a significant transformation into a supporting ally.

As a member of the Empire's most formidable fighting force, the Archons, Atal is distinguished by her immense power that is said to rival that of the goddess Mitama. Her physical appearance is striking and unconventional. She has short white hair and a distinctive black and blue striped horn protruding above her right eye. Her eyes are yellow, but her left eye features a unique yellow and red reticle-like pupil set against a black sclera, accompanied by yellow stripes on the left side of her face. Her skin is mostly pale with areas of black, separated by jagged blue lines. She typically wears a white jacket with black lines, leaving part of her right arm covered by a cape-like cloth.

Atal's personality is initially defined by a cold, machine-like obedience to the Empire. She is proud, stoic, and follows the orders of the Assembly without question, determined to overwhelm any obstacle with her raw power. This unwavering loyalty stems from her indoctrination as an Archon, a cyborg created by the ruling Assembly to control the population. Having been created or awakened in the Empire's final days, she was programmed to be its most devoted servant, lacking the memories of a human life that some other Archons retained.

Her role in the story begins as an agent of the Empire sent to eliminate the abnormal individuals in the village of Kakuri, where the protagonist Yukito Urabe resides. In a fierce battle, she proves to be more than a match for Mitama, pushing the goddess to her limits. However, her defeat comes not from Mitama, but from an unexpected betrayal by her fellow Archon, Loki. This defeat is a critical turning point. Upon learning that the Emperor is dead and the entire imperial government is a facade propped up by science, Atal loses all sense of purpose and hope. Her loyalty was her entire identity, and without it, she becomes confused and broken.

Her development is a central part of her arc. After being abandoned by the Empire and stripped of her convictions, she is left without a place to belong. It is through the intervention of Yukito Urabe, using a mix of trickery and genuine support, that she finds a new reason to exist. He helps her regain her confidence, and she subsequently joins his cult, becoming a reliable ally. In this new phase, she begins to develop human emotions and attachments, showing a more childish and vulnerable side that contrasts sharply with her earlier stoicism. She notably develops a fondness for ice cream, which becomes her favorite food. She also later adapts to a peaceful life, such as playing bass in the choir band of the Church of the Saviors.

Regarding her abilities, Atal is an exceptionally powerful combatant. She possesses destructive capabilities that can annihilate mountains with a single strike from her hands. Her physical attributes, including speed, reflexes, and endurance, are far superior to ordinary humans and even notable among her fellow Archons. After joining Yukito, she gains half of Mitama's power by sharing the faith of her believers, effectively becoming the group's second god. Her key relationships include her initial direct contact only with Loki and the healer Tishtorya during her time as an Archon. Later, her bond with Yukito becomes the cornerstone of her redemption and new life, while her interactions with Tishtorya help her learn to understand her own feelings.
