Description
Annie Leonhart is a graduate of the 104th Training Corps who ranked fourth in her class, known for her exceptional skills in both swordsmanship and unarmed combat. She is a person of considerably short height but possesses a small, very muscular build. Her appearance is marked by moderately short blonde hair, often tied back with a fringe draping over the right side of her face, and blue eyes that frequently hold a sullen expression. After being freed from her crystallized state years later, she lets her hair hang loose. In her daily life, she is often seen in a signature white hooded sweatshirt, and she wears a ring with a small folding blade to cause the self-injury required for her transformation.

Annie was not born within the Walls but is a Warrior from Marley, the nation that sent Titan shifters to infiltrate Paradis Island. Her mission was to recover the Founding Titan, a task she pursued as the wielder of the Female Titan. Her early life was harsh; after being identified as a Subject of Ymir, she was taken in by an adoptive father who subjected her to brutal combat training from a young age, hoping to gain a better life by turning her into a Warrior. This upbringing forged her into an isolated and exclusionary person. Friendships do not come easily to her, and she often wears an emotionless, apathetic expression. She tends to be realistic and somnolent, focusing on her goal of joining the Military Police Brigade for an easy life, yet she holds a strange respect for those with a deep sense of duty.

Her personality is a complex mix of cold pragmatism and suppressed emotion. She is highly intelligent, an excellent tactician, and very self-aware, freely admitting her own faults and selfishness without self-loathing. Her sense of humor is deadpan, mocking, and often emerges in intense situations. Despite her outward callousness, she experiences guilt and distress over her actions, such as apologizing to a corpse after a battle or shedding tears when she fails to capture Eren Yeager. She is driven above all by the desire for a normal life and to return to her father, who apologized for his treatment of her and begged her to come home before she left on the mission. This promise to her father becomes her primary motivation, to the point where she states she would commit all her sins again to see him.

Within the story, Annie serves first as a major antagonist, infiltrating the military and causing devastating losses to the Survey Corps. After her identity is exposed by Armin Arlert, she is defeated in a battle within Stohess District. To avoid interrogation and capture, she crystallizes herself, entering a comatose state and remaining imprisoned underground for approximately four years. Her role changes drastically in the final season when Eren Yeager initiates the Rumbling, which undoes all Titan hardening and frees her from the crystal. Upon awakening, she is weak and disoriented, initially focused solely on escaping to return to her father in Marley. However, she eventually joins forces with the remaining members of the Survey Corps, including Armin, Mikasa, Jean, and Connie, as well as former enemies like Reiner, to form an alliance aimed at stopping Eren and the Rumbling.

Her key relationships are central to her development. The most significant is with her adoptive father, whose farewell plea for her to return home becomes the anchor for her will to live. Her relationship with Armin Arlert is also crucial; she hesitated to kill him during their battles, and during the years she was encased in crystal, she could hear him speaking to her, which provided her comfort and a connection to her humanity. She shares a complex history with her fellow Warriors, Reiner Braun and Bertolt Hoover, often expressing anger and disgust at Reiner's hypocrisy and manipulation, yet bound to them by their shared mission and origins. After her release, she also reconciles with Hitch Dreyse, her former roommate in the Military Police Brigade, who helps her escape.

Throughout the series, Annie undergoes significant development. She begins as a weapon, a tool of Marley who has suppressed her emotions to complete her mission. Her crystallization serves as a form of stasis, but during her imprisonment, she has time to reflect. Upon her release, she becomes more open about her regrets, acknowledging that she has committed unforgivable acts. She transitions from a lone operative to a member of a cooperative alliance, working alongside her former enemies to save the world from a catastrophe she helped set in motion.

Annie possesses several notable abilities. Her primary power is the Female Titan, a Titan form with a lean, muscular build and exposed muscle tissue, which is highly agile and strong. Her greatest asset in this form is her mastery of hand-to-hand combat, a style taught to her by her father that is incredibly precise and lethal, allowing her to overpower most opponents, including other Titan shifters. The Female Titan also possesses the ability to harden parts of its skin, creating a crystalline armor for defense or for immobilizing opponents. This ability is what Annie used to encase herself in an indestructible crystal for four years. Even in human form, her fighting skills are unparalleled among her peers, easily defeating soldiers like Eren and Reiner in sparring matches.
