Description
Kenichi Kohiruimaki is a prominent character whose journey from a quiet, introverted teenager to a radicalized extremist forms a crucial secondary narrative. He is a former classmate of Kadode Koyama and is easily recognized by his tall, slender frame and distinctive bowl-cut hairstyle. During his high school years, he presents a calm and somewhat timid demeanor, showing a particular interest in subculture and music. However, beneath this unassuming surface lies a deep-seated anxiety about the alien invasion and the deteriorating state of the world around him.

Kenichi’s primary motivation is a desperate search for truth and security in a society that he feels has grown dangerously complacent. Unlike many of his peers who strive to maintain a sense of normalcy, he is consumed by the crisis and begins to voraciously consume information from the internet and social media. This obsession transforms his initial quiet curiosity into a fixation on conspiracy theories, which he uses to rationalize his growing fears about the invaders and the government’s response. His need to understand and control an uncontrollable situation ultimately drives his actions.

His role in the story serves as a stark contrast to the protagonists, Kadode and Ouran, who find solace in their daily lives and friendships. While they seek to preserve their immediate world, Kenichi becomes increasingly radicalized, believing that only drastic action can address the hidden truths he is convinced he has uncovered. His relationship with his girlfriend, Kiho Kurihara, is central to his early character development. Initially a couple, their relationship deteriorates because Kenichi becomes unable to disengage from his online research, prioritizing apocalyptic theories over genuine emotional connection and empathy, leading to their breakup.

The tragic death of Kiho is the definitive turning point for Kenichi. Overwhelmed by grief, survivor’s guilt, and rage against the invaders, he abandons his former passivity. After graduating, he remains in Tokyo and joins Aokyoutou, a violent radical group dedicated to hunting and killing aliens and confronting the government. He undergoes a significant physical and psychological transformation, becoming a hardened and dangerous terrorist who is willing to kill both aliens and humans to achieve his goals.

Kenichi’s development is marked by a descent into extremism driven by isolation and informational paranoia. He discovers a device that allows him to see the memories of the invaders, learning of a catastrophic future involving the destruction of the mother ship. This knowledge fuels his conflict with other characters, such as Keita Ōba, as he seeks to expose the truth through any means necessary, including seizing media broadcasts. Despite his turn to violence, his actions are rooted in a skewed sense of responsibility and a promise to become someone capable of protection, a promise he originally made to Kiho.

Notable abilities of Kenichi are not superhuman or fantastical. Instead, his most significant traits are his adaptability and his capacity for research and information gathering. He is adept at navigating online spaces to find and disseminate data, which he uses to build his worldview. Later, as a member of a militant group, he demonstrates proficiency with weapons and a willingness to use lethal force, showing a decisive and ruthless capability that starkly contrasts with his high school persona. His survival of a major explosion suggests he may possess or have access to alien technology, which he learns to utilize for his own protection.
