Description
Housen Ban is an executive of the Koga ninja clan and the father of Suzaku Ban in the anime Shinobi no Ittoki. He is depicted as a tall man with short brown hair, distinguished by two long fringes that resemble horns. Unlike the traditional attire of many ninja, Housen Ban is consistently dressed in a formal black three-piece suit with a white shirt and red tie, which gives him the appearance of a corporate businessman rather than a conventional warrior.

As a high-ranking member of the Koga leadership, Housen Ban is a ruthless and driven individual, relentlessly pursuing the future prosperity of his village. His methods are pragmatic and cutthroat, as he employs coercive tactics such as illegally pressuring and acquiring rival ninja companies through corporate takeovers. This professional ruthlessness, however, is tempered by a genuine concern for his son, Suzaku. Following the death of a previous Koga leader, Housen frequently urges his son to control his bloodlust and suppress his emotions, showing a paternal side that contrasts with his otherwise harsh demeanor. He is visibly shocked upon discovering Suzaku’s attempts to assassinate Ittoki Sakuraba, the protagonist and heir to the Iga clan.

Housen Ban’s role in the story is defined by his position within the escalating conflict between the Koga and Iga clans. While he is dedicated to the Koga’s prosperity, he is notably opposed to open warfare. He carries a distinct sense of honor that sets him apart from many of his allies, including his own son. In a direct confrontation with the Koga leadership, Housen declares the planned war against the Iga clan to be strategically pointless and warns that it would only lead to unnecessary bloodshed. This stance of defiance and his refusal to endorse the conflict ultimately seal his fate. His opposition is seen as cowardice by the Koga leader, Kido Minobe, leading to Housen Ban’s execution while he is still advocating against the war. This act concludes his narrative arc, marking him as a character whose desire to protect his clan’s future was ultimately outweighed by his principles.

In terms of abilities and notable traits, the series does not heavily focus on his combat prowess in the same way it does for younger ninja. His primary strengths appear to be strategic and economic, leveraging his position and corporate-style tactics to strengthen the Koga from the shadows rather than through direct physical conflict. His key relationships are with his son, Suzaku, whose violent impulses he tries to manage, and with the broader Koga council, whose aggressive policies he ultimately challenges. This development from a pragmatic executive to a principled dissenter provides a crucial turning point in the series' political landscape.
