Description
Ganetsu Suzunome is a supporting character in the Shinobi no Ittoki anime who serves as the head of the Saiga ninja village, a role that defines much of his identity and actions throughout the series. He is also a master craftsman of ninja tools, a skill he pursues with an old-fashioned sense of pride and dedication to traditional methods. His name, which incorporates characters meaning rock, crag, and iron, reflects his traditional values and steadfast, unyielding nature.

As the leader of the Saiga, Ganetsu is portrayed as an older, experienced man with gray hair and eyes, who carries the weight of his village's decline. Once a celebrated technological center for ninjutsu tools, Saiga has fallen on hard times and is now at risk of dying out entirely, with Ganetsu and his daughter among the last of its residents. The economic pressures on the village are immense, as the rival Koga clan has been moving their orders to foreign factories, directly threatening Saiga's survival. This precarious situation forces Ganetsu into difficult negotiations, including a pivotal meeting with Koga representatives like Enbi Takamine, who present a vague project proposal. Accepting the offer could make Saiga economically dependent on Koga, while declining it might seal the village's fate permanently.

Beyond his responsibilities as village head, Ganetsu's personal motivations center on his family, particularly his daughter, Ryoko Suzunone, a student at a ninjutsu academy. He rejects the idea of Ryoko following the family's ninja traditions, instead wishing for her to live a normal, peaceful life away from the dangers and hardships of the ninja world. His expertise in traditional craftsmanship influences Ryoko, who performs skillfully during ninja tool examinations at her academy, likely inheriting much of her knowledge from him.

Ganetsu's professional connections extend to the Iga clan, and he has a working relationship with Tokisada Kaga, who seeks his services for tool repairs and information. Through this connection, he plays a crucial role in the larger ninja conflict by revealing a significant secret from the past. He informs the Iga that Kidō Minobe, the leader of the Koga, had once commissioned a revolutionary device known as the Ninja Kernel, which was designed to store unprecedented amounts of energy. Ganetsu had ultimately refused to work on the project, finding it both technologically unfeasible and ethically questionable. This information proves vital for the Iga clan's understanding of Koga's true strategic motives.

Despite his desire for neutrality, Ganetsu is forced to navigate the increasingly aggressive tactics of the Koga clan. In one instance, they present a fraudulent mass order for ninja-themed toys, a deceptive scheme that pressures Saiga into beginning production. Despite the fraud, Ganetsu demonstrates his strong sense of professional integrity by resolving to fulfill the contract terms once work has begun. This incident further strains the relationship between Saiga and Koga but underscores Ganetsu's commitment to his word and his craft.
