Description
Lums Mutter, the mother of Lum and the queen of the Oni planet, is a recurring supporting character in the anime and manga series Urusei Yatsura. She is an Oni alien, a member of the same species as her daughter, and shares their distinctive physical traits: short green hair, blue eyes, small horns, and a tiger-striped dress that resembles a cheongsam. As the queen, she holds significant authority over the Oni homeworld and can command its space fleet at will.
Her background is that of royalty. She is married to an unnamed Oni king and is the mother of Lum. She appears occasionally throughout the series, most notably during a Parents Day episode at Tomobiki High School, where she visits Earth to observe her daughter's school life. In that appearance, she lands her spaceship on top of a carriage carrying Mendo's mother, inadvertently causing a minor clash between the two matriarchs.
Personality-wise, she is a warm and affectionate figure, particularly toward her daughter. However, she is also prone to misunderstandings due to cultural differences and a language barrier. She speaks only Oniboshigo, the native Oni language, which is rendered in the manga as mah-jong tiles and in the anime as unintelligible gibberish. Over time, she learns to understand other languages, though she never speaks them. This communication gap often leads to comedic situations, such as when Lum must translate her mother's words, sometimes deliberately altering the meaning for humorous effect. She is also portrayed as somewhat oblivious to human social conventions, as seen when she warmly hugs Mendo, a gesture that Mendo's mother interprets as an insult.
Her motivations center on her maternal role and her duty as queen. She cares deeply for Lum and supports her daughter's relationship with Ataru, despite the chaos it brings. She also exhibits a sense of pride in her family and her planet, ready to deploy the Oni military when she feels challenged.
In the story, she functions as a minor but memorable supporting character, appearing in several episodes and films of both the original 1981 anime and the 2022 remake, as well as in the manga. Her appearances are typically brief and comedic, highlighting the contrast between Oni culture and human society. She does not undergo significant development or character arcs, remaining a consistent figure of maternal authority and gentle confusion.
Her notable abilities include flight and the generation of powerful electrical discharges, similar to her daughter. She can also summon the Oni planet's space force instantly, demonstrating her royal authority. Like other Oni, she possesses superhuman durability and strength. Despite not speaking other languages, she can understand them, allowing her to follow conversations without being able to reply. In the manga, her speech is visually represented by mah-jong tile symbols, a unique trait that sets her apart from other characters.
